CD REVIEW Coldplay matures on new CD “A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD” Coldplay ★★★★★. out of ☆☆☆☆☆ BY BROOK BRISTOW THE GAMECOCK It was one of those musical mo ments. Even now, you can still re member how you felt. The emo tional melodic symphony went, “I never meant to cause you trou ble; oh, I never meant to do you wrong.” That was “Trouble” by Coldplay, and if you remember being there singing along, then you’d better be ready for what lead singer Chris Martin and Coldplay are bringing you next. “Parachutes,” releasedin 2000, was a masterpiece that took the band a lifetime to achieve. The fol low-up to the monster debut is “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” which took the band a little less than a year to complete. It is a journey through 11 tracks that goes from a cathartic beginning in “Politik,” a song about free trade and the hushed tones of Sept. 11, to the fi nal track, the quiet melody “Amsterdam.” While Coldplay still demon strates the melodic and harmonic brilliance of “Parachutes,” there is a renewed spirit in “A Rush of Blood to the Head” that shows the band’s maturity, as well as devel opment that will dispel criticism the band is a wannabe Radiohead and a group of young bedwetters. From the outset of “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” Coldplay es tablishes itself with soaring vocals and flawless chiming guitars. “Politik” opens the album with a two-chord clang and a call to arms that immediately draws listeners in. “In My Place,” the first ra dio single, is next and offers an uplifting soulfulness, though the song is about lone liness. With the lyrics “Please, please, please, come back and sing to me,” Coldplay travels back into the vein of “Parachutes,” but shows the sonic maturity it has gained since that album. “God Put a Smile on your Face” is a marvelous track that offers driving guitars accom panied by an edginess Coldplay ♦ COLDPLAY, SEE PAGE 7 PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Coldplay, left to right, Will Champion, Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland and Guy Berryman. The band’s newest album, “A Rush of Blood to the Head,” hits stores this week. The album displays the band's sonic growth as it matures past its earlier material. * Boat to rock Labor Day BY AUBREY FOGLE THE GAMECOCK What do you get when you combine platinum-selling rock bands, 1,000 fans and a big cruise ship?
