Odom said he was mindful of the different events that are scheduled to take place at the Carolina Center after it opens, like the circus, and tried to be accommodating. Those events “took away a num ber of dates that we would have liked to have played games in, but I don’t think that’s going to be a prob lem year in and year out,” he said. “We do have priority... but the first year, I wanted to be sensitive to the arena itself, not only to bas ketball fans, but to our communi ty, to our university. I wanted it to be everyone’s arena, not just bas ketball’s.” The Gamecocks open SEC play Jan. 8 against Ole Miss, and the Clemson game, which usually takes place in early December, will be Feb. 12. Both games are in Columbia. Comments on this story ? They looked like they were a step slow. In fact, the entire team looked like they were running on empty. I think we have gotten about as much as we could from them during two-a days.” The Gamecocks covered a va riety of scenarios during the scrimmage, including kickoffs, punts and working from deep in their own territory. The offense was the highlight of the scrimmage, especially quar terback Corey Jenkins, who threw for four touchdowns. Jenkins hooked up with James Adkisson for a 75-yard touchdown pass, and he also threw a pair of touchdowns to freshman Troy Williamson. Thez Robinson had the other touchdown reception. The team watched film Saturday morning and then went through a corrective practice ses sion without pads. The players were off Sunday. “They will have about 48 hours away from football, so hopefully they can get recharged and be ready to go again on Monday,” Holtz said Friday. Pinnock hurting Senior running back Andrew Pinnock wasn’t able to take part in Friday night’s scrimmage be cause of a shoulder injury, and Holtz questioned his status for this weekend’s opener. “Andrew has a bruised shoul der and hasn’t been able to go,” Holtz said. “He’s not in real good condition, and right now, he very well could not be ready for the opener.” Pinnock, who is expected to get most of the carries this year for USC, should be able to play this weekend. But if not, Robinson or senior Ryan Brewer could step into his place. Holtz likes the attitude ■ There aren’t as many veterans on this year’s team as last year’s, but Holtz likes the attitude his young team exhibits. “We may not be very good right now, but I really enjoy be ing around this group,” Holtz said. “They are a fun group. “I’m a perfectionist, and I’m never really comfortable heading into a season. We’ve got a lot to improve upon, but we’re playing hard, and I think we will be fun to watch.” Injury update Unlike during the team’s last scrimmage, when quarterbacks Dondrial Pinkins and Bennett Swygert went down, there were no new injuries to report Friday night. . Team doctors said Wednesday that Swygert, who has knee liga ment damage, would be re-exam ined soon and a decision would be made then on how his injury will be treated. Pinkins is out at least four weeks with a fractured ankle. Defensive back Isaac Stackhouse is improving but still out with a deep back bruise. Tailback Kenny Irons (knee) and , offensive linemen Chris White (neck), Stephen Sene (lower back) and Chad Walker (foot) are also out. One of last season’s co-cap tains, Melinda Carter, will lead Carolina’s offense in 2002. Carter, a midfielder, scored three goals and four assists last year, and at the close of the 2001 cam paign, she was named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Regional Team for the second time in her career. She was also named to the All-SEC Second Team. Returning senior Jessica Julin will join Carter in the Carolina offensive attack. The Finland native earned First Team All-SEC honors last sea son, scoring three goals and adding two assists for USC. Julin punctuated her junior year with game-winning goals against Ole Miss and UNC Greensboro. Morgan Mclntrye, a senior forward who missed all of last season with an ankle injury, will also be looked to for goals. McIntyre has scored 20 goals in her career. “A plus will be having Morgan back,” Smith said. “I think Morgan is someone who will make things happen up top and cause problems for the op ponents.” The Carolina defense, which allowed an average of one goal per game all season, has goal keepers Carolyn Ortega and Elise Matthews back in the nets in 2002. The pair combined for six shutouts last season. Also re turning on defense is last year’s co-defensive MVP, Sarah Lentz. The Florence native will be en tering her redshirt sophomore season at Carolina. With a veteran lineup return ing and Smith’s continued im provements to the program, Carolina is preparing to play deep into November and the NCAA Tournament. “The staff and the team are ex cited about the season,” Smith said. “I’m happy with the progress our team made last fall and in our spring practices, and we look to build upon this suc cess.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail.com Offense CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 The line should create plenty of space for whoever’s running behind it, whether it’s Jenkins, Pinnock or senior Ryan Brewer. Travelle Wharton (left tackle), Cedric Williams (left guard), C.J. Frye (center), Shane Hall (right - guard), and Watts Sanderson (right tackle) are the probable starters. Wharton earned Freshman All-America honors in 2000. “I feel good about our offensive line, in particular the starting unit,” Skip Holtz said. The offense’s question mark is in the receiving corps. The coach ing staff has harped on the in consistency of the group throughout preseason prac tice. But Matthew Thomas, Andrea Gause, James Adkisson and freshman Troy Williamson have the potential to Thomas make good things happen. “We have speed at wide re ceiver; this is as much speed as we have had,” Lou Holtz said. “We will be able to stretch the field.” In years past, the Gamecocks have often relied on their out standing defense to carry them. But with only four returning starters on this year’s defense, and the dynamic skill featured on this year’s offense, there might be a new formula for the Gamecocks in 2002. Fans will find out Saturday, when USC opens the season . against New Mexico State at Williams-Brice Stadium. Bachmeyer joins senior defend ers Tim Glowienka and Jordan Smith as the team’s captains. “Mike had a tremendous sea son last year, and we’re counting on him to finish his career on a high note by bringing all of his ex perience and talent to the fore front,” Berson said of the Charlotte, N.C., native, who had a 1.10 goals-against-average in 2001. The Gamecocks start the reg ular season next Friday at The Graveyard against Charleston Southern. USC’s schedule fea tures eight teams who played in the NCAA Tournament last sea son, including defending nation al champion North Carolina. “We are anxious to get the sea son started to see how this group comes together,” Berson said. “There are a lot of new faces and some very good talent, but so much of this team is unproven, and that puts tremendous pres sure on the veterans.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail.com . -1 Our prices rock! ^ hr lf.conr bvefc$y textbook superstore www.half.com/textbooks Retail Price on Price Half.com Intro to Microeconomics $64.00 $11.50 Intro to Psychology $30.75 $8.95 Intro to Calculus $24.95 $14.99 College Writing Skills $29.99 $14.00 Principles of Marketing $53.95 $18.99 TOTAL $203.64 $68.43 You Save $125.21! ! ’>'{ 5 off i ■ $50 purchase* ■ 1 Enter promo code ■ j "TEXT2002" a in your shopping cart | A AOL Keyword: Half.com Copyright 2002 Hatf.com, Inc.
