i meet PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Left to right, David Adedokun, Chris Corley, Kenny McWilliams and Caleb Weathersby are Courage Riley. Melody meets intensity ♦ BY CHARLES TOMLINSON THE GAMECOCK David Adedokun, a fifth-year public relations student, was searching for a band to perform his original solo material when he found the help of three high schoolers. Instead of simply remaining a backup band, two of the teenage musicians asked Adedokun, a to join their band instead. So Courage Riley came into being. Now, its name is constantly plastered on show calendars around Columbia and elsewhere. The band consists of Adedokun (vocals and bass), Chris Corley (guitar and vocals), Kenny McWilliams (guitar) and Caleb Weathersby (drums). “Kenny and Caleb told me they’d just started a band with Chris,” Adedokun said, “and they wanted me to come out and play with them. ” “They had to talk me into it,” he added. The band needed a bassist, and Adedokun didn’t even play the bass at the time. He learned “by necessity” during Courage Riley’s formation. Now, the band has released a five-song EP, and it has an upcoming split 7-inch with Wake Up September. And countless times, it has brought its tenacious rock show to the New Brookland Tavern, the Lettuce Lounge and Jammin’ Java. “We’re rock, but we’re definitely melodic rock,” Adedokun said. “We play with as much intensity as we can muster.” Adedokun credits The Gloria Record, Matthew Good Band and Cool Hand Luke for inspiring Courage Riley to get on stage and play. He also cites Better than Ezra as another influence, mainly because of its energetic and engaging live performances. Courage Riley will perform in Summerville on Tuesday, Aug. 27. The band returns to Columbia Sept. 12 with a performance at Uncle Doctor’s. For more information, visit Courage Riley’s Web site at www.courageriley.com. Maybe you think of pretentious, pompous, self inflated “musicians” who are too enamored with their own instrumentation that they find little time for words. Or maybe a struggling local band that has all the components of a rock band, but didn’t find a lead singer to thrill the crowd. But if you are a well informed fan of the local scene, you’re thinking of three guys from Columbia who play raw, neck-breaking rock who go by the straight-to-the-point name of Bolt. No, they’re not self absorbed. And no, they don’t have a lead singer; they’re not looking for one. Bolt is rock with a clenched fist to the nose. It’s music full of meticulous detail and craftsmanship, complex arrangements and synchronized chaos. With USC third-year art PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Bolt Is, left to right, Geoff Maxey, bass; Bill Elliot, drums; and Heyward Sims, guitar. studio student Heyward Sims on guitar, Geoff Maxey on bass and Bill Elliot on drums, you get this paradoxical package with artistic integrity and violent rage. The band members went to Dreher High School, where they met. And, as Sims pointed out, they’ve “always intended to be instrumental,” an intent that bothers many concertgoers. According to Sims, one of the advantages of going instrumental is that it “leaves room for more interpretation.” So what can a newcomer expect from Bolt’s live show? ♦ BOLT, SEE PAGE B4 Want to get your opinions heard? While new acts debut weekly at Non Stop Hip-Hop Live at New Brookland Tavern, the city’s established artists continue to gain momentum using Columbia’s fertile music environment as a springboard for national recognition. Beat Junction Project is one of those acts that seem to be on the verge of gaining success outside South Carolina’s boundaries. For the past two years, a group of seven guys has been electrifying Columbia crowds. Combining a throwback style, modeled after the emcees of the ‘80s who relied on stage presence to move a crowd, with a new-age twist, this group of emcees, DJs and producers has the formula for producing hip hop music with substance. Most people who have seen BJP live will say the group’s forte is its stage show. These hip-hop enthusiasts, all in their mid-20s, engage the crowd with call-and-response rituals led by the emcees Taseone, Un known and Octane. The emcees often personalize their performances by jumping off stage to recite their raps to audience members. Their performance is backed by the group’s soulful sounds, spun by DJ Shekeese, ♦ JUNCTION, SEE PAGE B4 PHOTO SPECIAL TO THE GAMECOCK Beat Junction Project’s DJ Shekeese with emcees Taseone, Un-known and Octane.
