BRIEFLY dyne s oass warns to visit space station MOSCOW (AP) — Lance Bass of the boy band ’N Sync is working to finalize his contract for an autumn flight with the Russian space agency, Russian officials said Monday. Space agency spokesman Vyacheslav Mikhailichenko said Bass has “serious intentions” and that they are negotiating terms of the flight contract. Bass has received clearance from Russian space doctors for a flight, and has been training at the Star City cosmonauts center outside Moscow. Mikhailichenko said Bass has paid for his training, but wouldn’t disclose the sum. If Bass signs the contract, he’d blast off for a weeklong mission to the station along with Russian Sergei Zaletin and European Space Agency astronaut Frank DeWinne of Belgium. Neither the space agency nor Bass has commented on financial details of his bid. The world’s only two space tourists both spent $20 million on weeklong trips. Drug charges dropped for‘optimistic’ Downey INDIO, Calif. (AP) — Drug charges against actor Robert Downey Jr. were dismissed Friday by a judge who also ended his probation. Riverside County Superior Court Judge Randall D. White made his ruling after determining that Downey had stayed clean and sober for 14 months. Downey’s attorney Jim Epstein said his client was “absolutely ecstatic and very optimistic he’ll be able to stay sober and get movie parts again.” Downey told the judge he was serious about staying out of trouble. The actor was sentenced last July to a year at a live-in rehabilitation center and three years probation after pleading no coritest to cocaine possession and being under the influence. Deputy District Attorney Kevin Shek had argued that Downey’s probation be extended for six more months while the charges remained in place. The judge denied that request.
