BRIEFLY NCAA violations reported by USC COLUMBIA (AP) -The USC football program reported eight secondary NCAA violations from May through December. Three of the violations involved the foot ball team. Each violation was ruled sec ondary by the NCAA, which ac cepted the corrective action tak en by the university’s athletic de partment and involved letters of reprimand in most cases, athlet ics spokesman Kerry Tharp said. The Greenville News acquired the information through a Freedom of Information Act re quest. The coaches and athletes involved were not named. The three football violations re ported were: - Two players attending sum mer school at a junior college re ceived tutoring from USC while not enrolled at the university. Both have reimbursed the school, Tharp said. - A player received more than the SEC allotment of four tickets for a home game. - A walk-on player signed his complimentary guest card allow ing family members to attend a game but then had guests admit ted who were not family mem oers. The track and field team also reported three violations, includ ing a coach paying for athletes’ meals, an athlete competing with out being listed on the official squad list, and an athlete who competed before being certified as eligible. One violation involved athletes from several sports. Four players had their names and pictures “as sociated improperly with com mercial entities,” the school said. That involved a weekly athlete of-the-week feature in the publi cation Spurs & Feathers, Tharp said. The final reported violation in volved men’s basketball player Marius Petravicius, who was de clared ineligible for playing for a team that was a member of a European pro league. He was sus pended for three games before he regained his eligibility. Men’s golf finishes 9th in tournament Three Gamecocks finished in the top 25 of the Cleveland Golf Augusta State Invitational this past weekend to elevate USC’s men’s golf team to a ninth-place finish. USC combined for a three round total of 859. SEC foe Tennessee blasted an 841 to lead the 18-team field. Wake Forest fin ished second while Clemson placed third. Martin Rominger continued his success for Carolina with his fifth top-20 finish of the season. Rominger shot a 209 to finish in a tie for 10th place. Freshman teammate Alex Hamilton shot a 67 in the final round to vault him to 17th place, his first top-20 finish of the season. Hamilton posted a three-round to tal of 211. Also cracking the top 25 was sophomore Brent Delahoussaye. Delahoussaye fired a 213 to tie for 21st. Carolina returns to action April 19-21 at the SEC Championships in Sea Island, Ga. Last season, the Gamecocks fin ished in seventh place. Women’s golf plays solid final round but only finishes in 3rd The USC women’s golf team posted its best score of the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic on Sunday by firing a 302, the best round by any team for the day. Auburn fired a 304 to win the tournament, but the Lady Gamecocks finished with a score of 911, holding off Vanderbilt for third place by two strokes. Junior All-American Kristy McPherson and sophomore Adrienne Gautreaux led the Lady Gamecocks, as each finished five over (221) for the tournament and in a tie for fifth place. McPherson now has four top-five finishes on the season, and Gautreaux now has two. Gautreaux fired a one over 73 on Sunday, while McPherson shot a four-over 76. On the mound, Carolina is lec by senior Megan Matthews Matthews is 15-4 with a 1.37 ERA and 147 strikeouts this season Matthews also has nine shutouts Stacey Johnson sports an 8-E record and a 1.69 ERA with 77 strikeouts, while SEC Pitcher of the Week Aleca Johnson (6-1,1.91 ERA) comes off a big week where she notched three victories and struck out 13 in 8 2/3 innings.
