BRIEFLY John Glenn to narrate orchestral performance PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Former astronaut John Glenn, the first American in orbit, said he’s nar rating an orchestral performance to instill in others an apprecia tion of space. Glenn, who became the first American to circle the Earth on Feb. 20, 1962, will accompany Peter Nero and the Philly Pops in an April 8 performance titled “Voyage into Space.” The performance at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the space launch. “If people come out and have an appreciation of both the mu sic and space, why, that would be the best thing,” Glenn said on Monday. Nero has written the narra tion, which will follow the gener al format of a trip into space. The multimedia event will include a symphony orchestra, video screens and special effects. Hare Krishnas plan garden for Harrison CALCUTTA, INDIA (AP) - Hare Krishnas are planning a garden in eastern India in the memory of former Beatle George Harrison, a longtime devotee of Hinduism who died last year. “We are going to set up the George Harrison Garden at Mayapur to commemorate his contribution in spreading the messages of Lord Krishna through his music,” Dayaram Das, head of the Calcutta chapter of the International Society of Krishna Conscio The Dead Kennedys closer to legal action OAKLAND, CALIF. (AP) - A rift between singer Jello Biafra and his former punk band, the Dead Kennedys, is growing wider with more legal action. Biafra’s attorney has filed a lawsuit in Alameda Superior Court alleging his former band . mates are recording new music with a Biafra impersonator. The real Biafra, whose birth name is Eric Reed Boucher, also alleges his former bandmates used his name, picture and iden tity to promote new live record ings and performances. Biafra is asking for damages of more than $25,000 from the three remaining original Dead Kennedys, including Ray Pepperell (“East Bay Ray”), Geoffrey Lyall (“Klaus Flouride”) and Darren Henley (“D.H. Peligro”). Review CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 Soledad Brothers sound so much like the White Stripes that they could almost be related. It’s like one huge, dysfunctional rock ‘n’ roll family—with Mick Jagger playing the role of their long-lost father. Under White’s watchful eye, the Soledad Brothers’ mish-mash sound is controlled by a wide variety of instruments. Overpowering punky guitars have an obvious presence on songs such as “Michigan Line,” and saxophone- and piano-driven tracks such as “Prodigal Stones Blues” and “.32 Blues” are abundant on “Steal Your Soul.” Most of the songs’ names speak for themselves. “Prodigal Stones Blues” sounds like an homage to early ’70s Rolling Stones style, as heard in the album “Exile on Main Street.” The group even covers “There’s No Sunshine When She’s Gone,” and they add to the nightclub effect with a muted, slowed-down whisper and a twangy guitar playing in the background. Three rockers with guitars, drums, a harmonica, a piano and a saxophone is a recipe for a strange concoction. These guys, however, pull it off quite nicely and even make some good music in the process. The new Oxford Classics edi tion is noticeably more direct from its Victorian predecessor. What Burton calls “supported con gress,” the new book terms “sex standing up.” The two editions agree, howev er, on the “lotus” position and the gymnastic embrace called “split ting the bamboo.” That kind of exotic eroticism has made “Kamasutra” the bane of generations of parents and teachers, and the book remains controversial. Doniger says the book’s repu tation has obscured its value as a work of literature. She says it can be read as a play in seven acts, fol lowing its male and female pro tagonists from seduction through separation, and as an idealized portrait of a sophisticated, monied society.
