INSIDE: Special insert includes I USC spring sports information - * HISTORY GIVES FEW CLUES AS TO WHO WILL WIN SG RUNOFF The past has split verdict on runoff’s outcome i BY BRANDON LARRABEE \ THE GAMECOCK At first glance, David ' Bornemann’s first-election lead in the race for Student Government president might seem to deter op ponent Ankit Patel. USC’s SG history shows that | front-runners often go on to win f runoff elections. In the 11 runoffs held for president since 1987, the leaders in the first round of bal loting have won eight times. But a closer look shows the numbers don’t favor Bornemann as much as they appear. All three wins by the candidates who came in second in the initial voting were in races where the margin of victory the first time was less than 14 percent. Bornemann currently leads by 11 points. In fact, front-runners with those lower margins have split those races evenly with the un derdogs, winning only three of them. ♦ HISTORY, SEE PAGE 2 Ankit Patel ♦Wishes to constitutionally mandate the following Cabinet positions: directors of Community Services Programs, Minority Affairs, Greek Affairs, Women’s Issues and Environmental Affairs. ♦Wants to reduce SG spending. ♦Supports hiring and retention of more qualified minorities. ♦Wants to challenge USC to match new green spaces with < new parking spaces. ♦Wants USC to make good on past promises for a recycling and-conservation program.
