BRIEFLY Walvius finalist for coaching award USC women’s basketball head coach Susan Walvius is one of 20 finalists for the 2002 Naismith College Basketball Coach of the Year Award. Picked to finish 10th in the SEC, Walvius’ Lady Gamecocks are 21-4 and currently ranked No. 10 in the nation. They are in second place in the SEC at 9-3. The Lady Gamecocks will finish the season with their first winning record since 1996 and their first 20-win sea son since joining the SEC in 1991. ' Men’s soccer to open spring play The USC men’s soccer team opens its spring season this Saturday when it travels to Charleston to take on College of Charleston and Jacksonville. USC will play two 70-minute matches with two 35-minute halves. Carolina plays College of Charleston at 11:20 a.m., followed by Jacksonville at 12:40 p.m. Women divers in early lead at SECs The USC men’s and women’s diving teams opened up the first day of competition at the SEC Swimming & Diving Championships at the Arkansas Natatorium. After the first day of diving, Carolina is tied for first place on the women’s side with 33 points. The men’s squad sits in sixth place with 15 points. For the women, who are tied with Tennessee, sophomore Holly Hodges and freshman Tracey Richardson each reached the finals for USC in the one-me ter competition. Hodges placed fifth with a score of269.95, while Richardson, in her first SEC Championships, earned seventh place with 247.15. The men’s squad also earned points on the first day, with three divers in competition on the three-meter board. Senior Brandon Hulko placed the high est for USC, finishing 10th in the preliminaries with a score of 465.95. Freshman Dean Emmerton was right behind Hulko with a score of 464.90. Senior Brad Brown finished 15th with a score of439.35. Women’s tennis topples Harvard The USC women’s tennis team held off 39th-ranked Harvard 4-2 in a non-conference match at the USC Indoor Tennis Center on Monday afternoon.
