CD REVIEW Sense Field mixes rock, pop ___sense field ioriight and forever BY MATT RAY THE (iAMECOCK “TONIGHT AND FOREVER” Label: Nettwerk America out of ☆☆☆☆ With a will that wouldn’t die, Sense Field fought through affliction to release its fourth album. After five years of adversity with its former record label, Sense Field has finally released a follow-up to its 1996 record, “Building.” The group’s original follow up album, “Under the Radar,” had been delayed eight times over five years under Sense Field’s previous record label, Warner. Sense Field parted ways with Warner and signed a new contract with Nettwerk America and released its latest album, “Tonight and Forever.” Sense Field, comprising Rob Pfeiffer on drums, John Stockberger on bass, Jon Bunch on lead vocals, Chris Evenson on guitar and Rodney Sellars on guitar and vocals, revamped “Under the Radar,” the album that never saw the light of day, to record “Tonight and Forever.” Recorded in the band’s own studio in El Segundo, Calif., “Tonight and Forever” is composed of melodic tunes and hard-hitting guitars. With such lyrics as “The fun never ends until you bury your friends” (“Fun Never Ends”) and “I wanna learn how you save yourself for someone who loves you for you, loves me for me” (“Save Yourself’), Sense Field lightly delivers serious lyrics. Sellars, Evenson and Bunch came from a punk rock background that’s noticeable in songs such as “No Longer Now” and “Love Song.” You can sense the punk in their music in the hard guitar strokes and pounding drums. The first track, “Fun Never Ends,” kicks it off with a muscular guitar arrangement mixed with an emo-popsound. “Weight of the World” adds a different flavor to the album with nice transitions between acoustic and electric guitars. Sense Field’s mix of emo-pop and emo-rock creates an amazingly well-balanced sound. The music is too diverse to fit easily in one genre. The all-out rock attack in “What Never Dies,” juxtaposed with the slower beat and the lyrics “If you see her tonight, tell her I love her still” in the next track, “Am IA Fool,” makes one think' twice about what genre Sense Field is trying to excel in. The group seems to be setting a standard with this mixture of pop and rock; whatever it did on this album, it works. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a fan of hard rock or less in-your-face, more mellowed-out music; you’ll find both these qualities in “Tonight and Forever.” Comments on this story?
