The victims said someone took a Pentax 35mm zoom lens camera and a $1,700 check from USC from their unlocked Capstone dorm room. Both items were in plain view on the victims’ desk. The victim said an unknown vehicle slightly damaged the rear passenger-side panel of her 1993 green Honda Accord. The vehicle has been moved several times from its legally parked space. The victim said someone took a marine science textbook, a calculus book and answer key, and a chemistry book. Estimated value: $300. Reporting officer: Kerwin and M.P. Moore. (9) AUTO BREAK-IN, 1300 BLOSSOM ST. The complainant said someone broke out the passenger-side window of his 1993 white Chevy Cavalier and took a red and blue Sony CD radio. Estimated value: $400. STATE Referendum would let officials gamble COLUMBIA— A joint resolution that would let people vote on whether any elected officials could play the South Carolina Education Lottery was introduced Tuesday by Rep. John Scott, D-Columbia. The state’s Constitution says it’s illegal for anyone holding “an office of honor, trust or profit,” to gamble. As the law stands, it’s not clear whether officials such as city councilmen, notaries public or even school board members can play the lottery, Scott said. NATION American Taliban officially charged WASHINGTON-John Walker Lindh, the 20-year old Californian who fought with the Taliban in Afghanistan, was charged Tuesday with conspiracy to kill U.S. citizens. He will be tried in a civilian court and could face life in prison. After weeks of deliberation, The Bush administration opted against a military trial or charges that would carry the death penalty. Lindh, who converted to Islam at 16 and is alleged to have trained at an al-Qaida camp in Afghanistan, was charged in a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va. The body of a 72-year old Israeli-American man was found in a bullet-riddled car in the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour, Palestinian security officials said.
