IN YOUR OPINION i i bitter lie that the adminis tration wants student input. If they really wanted us students to attend the SDIC meetings, we would read about in flyers and e-mails sent through the various campus listservs, not in The Gamecock the day or so afterward. As for Student Government, everyone but the people involved with it realize that, in the end, SG can do very little to make a difference in student life and usually chooses to do even less (the Eaddy administration being a luminous departure from this pattern). But the blame cannot fall on the board alone. It was our own state legislature’s squandering of our budget surplus and its under estimation of USC’s value to this state that put us in this situation in the first place. We cannot appeal to the general public — the campus could bum to the ground for all they care, so long as the football team wins its next game. And where, oh where, is the fury and the organization I saw last spring when some of us marched on the State House? I was never so proud of my fejlow students in my life and wished that I could join them. Sadly, we’ve learned that nothing we say gets through. To anyone. So we scurry to find enough money to pay our tuition, various colleges within USC see their classes canceled or facing total collapse, membership in the Honors College now comes with a hefty fee, the patch cords Computer Services used to distribute for free now cost $25, professors print notices on overhead projectors to.scrimp on paper ... and all because the people. with the power to change things won’t act and the people in need can’t. No wonder John Palms is leaving. If I were in his position, so would I. He sees where this handbasket is heading and wants out. JAMES L. “VLADIMIR” ENLOW FOURTH YEAR STUDENT, RELIGIOUS STUDIES Family says thanks to daughter’s friends On behalf of our daughter, Connie S. Tingin, who passed away just recently, our family would like to express our sincere gratitude to all her friends, teachers and anyone who was associated with her. Each and every one of you made an impact on our daughter’s life. She would not have been the person she was without the various influences that she attained during her growing-up years. Those influences transformed her into a young, strong and very outspoken woman. She lived a lifetime’s worth in such a brief time. Connie is missed, and it will take some time for the emptiness to be whole again. We have to be strong. Connie would have wanted it that way, but every time you see a butterfly, just smile and say, “That’s Connie’s spirit — so beautiful and free.” The Tingin Family of Goose Creek, S.C., extends its gratitude to whom Connie had touched during her entire existence in this world. THE TINGIN FAMILY GOOSE CREEK, S.C. Submission Policy Letters to the editor or guest columns are welcome from the Carolina community. Letters should be 250-300 words. Watson The throwdown at the fairgrounds CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6 advocating the audac ious conduct that will take place; I’m just predicting it. It’s going to get vicious down there. Those with weak stomachs should stay in Irmo. The fairgrounds will become war zones, and the stands at Williams-Brice will become a sea of fights, liquor law violations and arrests. Without a doubt, doctors one through nine will have a busy day Saturday. When the fourth quarter winds down and USC has more points on the board, the field will be in absolute chaos. The goal posts will undoubtedly come down, and once again Williams-Brice Stadium will be left absolutely devastated. No amount of encouraging good sportsmanship will work. The football players might be sportsmen, but most of the fans are not. In the words of’Lil John and the Eastside Boys, “If you scared to throw it up, get the **** out the club.” (That’s Gangese for “If you are fearful of acknowledging the organization you support, don’t come to a venue at which both sides of the conflict in question will be publicly involved in a power struggle.)
