Arkansas Holtz, Petty both frustrated after loss CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 look they hoped would offer new results. Corey Jenkins entered as quarterback for USC to start off its first drive of the half. The drive started with the same problems, however, as Jenkins fumbled his first snap. Jenkins made up for his early mistake with a couple of rushes and a completed pass be fore he broke loose for a 41-yard run into the end zone. The PAT was good, and the Gamecocks led 7-3. Jenkins was just happy to play his part. “I went in and tried to make a few things happen. I just wanted momentum to pick up a little for us,” Jenkins said. The Razorbacks responded on their next drive by going down the field 69 yards before quarterback Zak Clark completed a 10-yard pass to Richard Smith for the touchdown with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter. The Gamecocks were forced to punt for two straight drives before getting a final chance to reclaim the lead with 6:23 left in the game. Starting on their 20-yard line, the Gamecocks went 27 yards before Petty threw a 30-yard strike to Brian Scott to put the USC on the 17-yard line. Carolina attempted two rushes by Petty and Pinnock before finding themselves in a third-and-four on the 10-yard line. An offsides penalty pushed the Gamecocks back 5 yards. Petty at tempted a touchdown pass to Scott, but Razorback defender Ahmad Carroll was able to con tain the USC wideout. USC then lined up to attempt the field goal. The Gamecocks, wary of the height of the Razorbacks, practiced all week kicking a half-yard further than usual in hopes the ball would get more height early. Daniel Weaver kicked the ball, but it only found the hands of Arkansas defender Carlos Hall, who ended the USC drive with 53 seconds remaining in the game. The Razorbacks ran out the clock to hold onto their vic tory over the No. 9 Gamecocks and their first SEC win of the season. After the game, Holtz was frus trated with the way his team played. “We played hard here today, but we didn’t necessarily play in telligent,” Holtz said. “It’s a very disappointing loss.” Petty was frustrated, but knew the team couldn’t harp on the loss for too long. “It’s one we felt we let slip away, but you can’t have it back; it’s over. We just have to find a way to bounce back.” Comments on this story?E-mail gamecocksports@hotmail.com. Almond In SEC, any team can win on any day CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 it’s that in the SEC, you can’t overlook anyone. I’m not saying USC overlooked Arkansas or Florida overlooked Auburn. But the upset wins should serve as a future reminder to any teams that get complacent. This conference is stocked from top to bottom, and any team can win on a given day. There’s no Duke or Baylor in the SEC, even if Vandy sometimes looks like it. Shoutouts Bob Stoops, you can hand that Coach of the Year honor over to Ralph Friedgen now.... MJ, nix 'the goatee....
