Committee Close evaluations ahead for all USC programs, colleges CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 The evaluation process is complicated, according to Carolyn West, a committee mem ber and USC’s regional campus es director. “A large university cannot be evaluated in the same way most businesses can,” West said. “Our resources can’t go simply to those programs that bring in the most money. We have to look at our long-term goals and overall strengths.” West opposes equal-rate cuts. “If we did that, we would all lose because everyone would be mediocre,” she said. “We want to make our budget work in the most effective way possible.” SDIC’s recommendations could permanently change the structure of the university, even if budget cuts are only tempo rary. “I’ve never gotten the sense that we’re trying to fix short term budget problems,” Cargile said. “We’re focused on the long term interests of the university.” Committee members assure students that their opinions about USC’s future will be con sidered. “Part of our job is to make sure that no students lose out in the process,” Luna said. “We’d love to see them get as involved as possible.” Members urge students to write the committee about their concerns. “We want to know what the students love about this univer sity and what changes they would like to see,” Cargile said. “They see this school from a dif ferent perspective than we pos sibly could, and their input will be valuable.” The committee will hold pub lic forums students may attend on Sept. 11 (location not yet se lected), Sept. 18 at Belk Auditorium and Sept. 25 at the Law School auditorium. “We hope students will take the time to attend the forums,” West said.
