SHOWBIZ BRIEFS Fans love Dukes of Hazzard car SPERRYVILLE, VA. (AP) - Dukes of Hazzard fans may have a crush on Daisy Duke, but they’re in love with the General Lee. The love affair with the souped-up 1969 Dodge Charger was evident over the weekend at Cooter’s Place, the Sperryville general store dedicated to all things Hazzard. The store is owned by Ben Jones, who played Cooter the mechanic on the show and was a two-term congressman from Georgia in the early 1990s. As the General Lees arrived Friday and Saturday for DukesFest 2001, drivers pulling into Cooter’s honked their horns, which played “Dixie” just like the car on the show. The Dukes of Hazzard ran for seven years on CBS in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Critics hated it, but it was the nation’s top-ranked TV show for several years. It told the story of good hearted outlaws Bo and Luke Duke, and their adventures against the corrupt Boss Hogg. Director checks out Pa. town NEWTOWN, PA. (AP)-M. Night Shyamalan has a certain sense about this town north of Philadelphia. The filmmaker was recently spotted checking out the shops and scenery in this suburb, a location on his upcoming movie, Signs. Newtown “just had the right small-town feel to it. It’s such a sweet, little town,” he said. Shyamalan said Wednesday that his new movie revolves around a farmer played by Mel Gibson who discovers mysterious patterns in his field. Filming of the Disney Touchstone Pictures film is expected to take place in Newtown by the end of October, according to Andrew Ullman, the movie’s location manager. “It’s an awesome town and works very well for the film,” Ullman said. “Newtown will be identified as Newtown in the movie.” Newt Gingrich posts reviews on Amazon ATLANTA (AP) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is making the most of his voracious reading habit and love of the Internet by writing personal reviews of books he likes and posting them on Amazon.com. With 47 posted, Gingrich ranks 473rd among Amazon reviewers. As one of the “Top 500,” he has his own page on Amazon.com, with a biography, photograph and list of books he has critiqued. “I do it for the fun of it,” the former Republican congressman told The Atlanta Journal Constitution for Friday’s editions. “Friends were always asking me what I was reading, and so I thought it would be nice to write reviews. “Half the things I read are light fiction, while the rest relate to politics, technology and warfare,” Gingrich said. Richard Burton diary presumed stolen LONDON (AP) — A diary Richard Burton kept during his first tempestuous marriage to Elizabeth Taylor is missing and presumed stolen from the British Broadcasting Gorp. The diary was among items Burton’s widow, Sally, lent to the BBC earlier this year for the filming of a documentary about the actor’s life. After the items were returned in March, Sally Burton discovered the diary was not among them. “The possibility that it has been stolen is a strong one,” a BBC spokeswoman said Friday on customary condition of anonymity. She said the diary had been kept in a locked cupboard at the BBC’s west London television center. Scotland Yard confirmed it was investigating the theft of documents from the BBC. “We haven’t given up hope of recovering it, and we have been co-operating with the police over this matter,” the BBC spokeswoman said. dean Penn siams filmmaking quality EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (AP) — Sean Penn praised anti globalization protesters and slammed the quality of Hollywood filmmaking in scathing comments before a film festival screening of his new movie. He dismissed President Bush as a “nowhere man” on Thursday and lauded protesters at a recent global meeting for caring about something beyond themselves. “I don’t know if people value the thought of revolution any more,” Penn told reporters at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where he was promoting The Pledge, which he directed. “I think it would be an enormously patriotic movement to invest in the possibility of revolution. “There’s a lot of stuff going on around the world and in the U.S. as well, like the protests in Genoa and Seattle, and young people are putting themselves on the line,” he said, referring to demonstrations at this summer’s G8 meeting in Italy and the 1999 World Trade Organization conference in Seattle. The 41-year-old Penn said he became a director because the quality of most Hollywood films was so poor, he figured he could do a better job himself.
