Sports Briefs ■ ABCA chooses four USC baseball players Four Gamecocks were named to the American Baseball Coaches Association’s All-South Region Team this week, with Tim Whittaker, Lee Gronkiewicz, Marcus McBeth and Kip Bouknight all claiming the honor. Whittaker and Gronkiewicz were named to the first team, while Bouknight and McBeth made the second team. As first-team selections, Whittaker and Gronkiewicz are automatically nominated for All-America consideration. ■ Roberts called up Former Gamecock and current Baltimore Oriole Brian Roberts received his first major-league start Thursday against the New York Mets. Roberts was 1-4 in the effort after being called up from Triple A Rochester when regular Orioles shortsop Mike Bordick was injured. Roberts came to USC in 1999 after two years at North Carolina. The shortstop claimed All-America honors and led the nation with 67 stolen bases, which also sett an SEC record. He is the first of coach Ray Tanner’s USC players to reach the highest level of professional baseball. ■ Goodman on “You Gotta See This!” USC defensive back Andre Goodman was featured on Sports Fox Net’s “You Gotta See This!” Saturday. The show highlighted Goodman’s return from a season-ending and career threatening knee injury sustained in the second game of the 1998 season against Georgia. Goodman returned to the team in 1999, where he logged 35 tackles and one interception. The red-shirt senior from Greenville also had a solid 2001 season, highlighted by an interception that helped the Gamecocks upset No. 9 Georgia. ■ Edwards, Brown chosen All Americans Blue Ribbon magazine announced its preseason All-America lists, with linebacker Kalimba Edwards and comerback Sheldon Brown making the first team. Edwards, a first-team All SEC selection, recorded 73 tackles in 2000 with seven sacks. He is projected as a first-round draft pick and has been named to the Rotary Lombardi Award watch fist.
