This Week in USC History April 20, 1988 — Gandhi’s grandson Ramchandra Gandhi spoke today on “Peace & Non-Violence: Impossible Dreams?” Friday, April 20, 2001 by Michelle Pittman The Gamecock Oiganizations and individuals around the world will celebrate Earth Day on April 22. The celebration began early at USC as the School of the Environment, SAGE and Faculty Services met to promote a cleaner planet. The central event was held Wfednesday, with students and faculty joining for the Clean Carolina Earth Day Sweep, removing litter and working toward a cleaner campus. Recent policy shifts by the Bush administration have upset the environmental community, but the most important aspect of Earth Day is haw it affects all of us. “Sitting back and waiting for the political winds to change is a risky gamble with unacceptably high risks,” said Jan Thomas, U.S. program director for Earth Day Network, a non-profit group that helps smaller organizations coordinate Earth Day events. This year, the focus lias expanded not only to litter and pollution control, but also to warnings of swiftly dwindling energy supplies, global warming and the expanded use of renewable resources. “Slashing funding for eneigy efficiency and renewable eneigy — at a time when concerns about global warming are rising and supply problems and price liikes are spawning fears of an eneigy crisis—is poor public policy and a lost opportunity,” Thomas said. The events planned for the remainder of the USC Earth Day celebration aim to change attitudes about the importance of preserving the environment and to influence personal behavior and public policy. Ultimately, it is awareness and worldwide citizen action that will compel politicians to take global warming seriously,” Thomas said. Events will continue throughout the weekend. Free prizes, T-shirts and refreshments will be offered at Saturday’s 15-mile bike ride. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. On Sunday, the week will be capped off with an Earth Day celebration at Finlay Park. Bring a blanket and a trash bag and do your part to clean up the environment. Clerks, an animated series based on the 1994 cult hit movie directed by Kevin Smith, ran on ABC for only two of its scheduled six episodes before it was yanked and replaced with re runs of Spin City. ABC claimed the show’s poor ratings were mainly to blame for the cancellation, but it also seemed to be uncomfortable with Clerks' “risque" content. Smith himself had this to say after the cancellation. “What more can I say about the wonder boys at ABC that I haven’t already? I know the ratings weren’t great, but there were only four more to go... Wfe now return you to Spin City... Because, man, that show is really funny.” Obviously frustrated with the cancellation, Smith set out to bring these lost episodes to the people in the form of a new two-DVD set released last month. The set contains all of the episodes in their original order along with commentary by Smith and the voice actors, plus inside looks at how the animated characters were designed. The show follows Dante and Randal, two clerks at the Quick Stop convenience store, and the two miscreants, Jay and Silent Bob, who hang out in front of it. All these characters are voiced by the same actors from the Clerks movie: Brian Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith, respectively. There are some new characters to discover, such as Leonardo Leonardo, a millionaire who sees the Quick Stop as “a thom in his side” and is voiced maliciously by Alec Baldwin. Lots of other guests show up along the way, including Charles Barkley, who finds his way into every episode. It’s a true shame that Clerks was canceled because it’s a total laugh riot. Fans of Smith’s movies won’t be disappointed with the series. Wliile some say its often-offensive nature copies South Park, the completely unpredictable antics of the characters and the plethora of pop culture references is more reminiscent of the heyday of The Simpsons. Spoofing everything from Beverly Hills Cop to 1932’s Freaks, Smith remains the master of pop. The animation is great and catches the feel of the movie while adding more flexibility to the characters and their surroundings. People unfamiliar with Smith’s movies might find the DVD set a bit unapproachable, but do yourself a favor and rent Clerks— then, once you have fallen in love with it, get the Clerks animated series DVD. BELOW: Michelle Craig puts a lei around Henry Thompson’s neck. by Aaron Hark and Amanda Silva The Gamecock Just as the semester started to wind down, Columbia Hall residents took the opportunity to celebrate Wednesday night with a roof party. From 7-11 p.m., partygoers enjoyed popcorn, drinks and live music 12 stories above downtown Columbia. Wednesday night’s event was sponsored by the Columbia Hall Government and was open to all residents of campus housing. “Hall government sponsored the rooftop party. There was a band, refreshments and party favors, like leis,” said first-year College of Science and Mathematics student Ashley Jones. Nearly 150 people attended the event, fc “We had a great turnout, and everybody seemed to have a great time,” Jones said. Manifest Discs & Tapes donated CDs for giveaway, but according to hall government representative Mitesh Patel, the larger prizes were the biggest draw. “People were most excited about the DVD player, TV and digital camera that we gave away,” Patel said. The event kicked off with music from a DJ, follwed by the band Blackbeard’s Truck, a rock quartet of students from colleges around South Caroliiiji. “Hall government had this to help build spirit with the residents,” Jones said.
