From Battlefield Earth to Little Nicky, the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation celebrates the worst Hollywood has to offer by Tug Baker The Gamecock All eyes in Hollywood are on the Oscars. For 73 years, the Academy of Motion Pictures has been honoring the best movies from around the wo..d. However, for the actors who slip through the cracks and fall short of the Oscars’ golden glory, there are the Razzies. The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation pays tribute to the worst films and performances Tinsel Town has to offer. For 21 years, the Razzies have searched to find the worst of the worst and have taken it upon themselves to warn the general public about these films. Past Razzie winners have been such cinematic droppings as Wild Wild West, Striptease, The Postman and Showgirls. The Razzies mainly recognize opposite categories from the Oscars, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Screenplay. Besides these standard categories, the Razzies also throw in a few new categories every year, such as Worst Sequel or Remake (past winners: The Scarlet Letter, P ho) and Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property (Con Air). With 2000 being one of the worst years for film in quite a while, the Razzies have had their hands full. Battlefield Earth has walked away with the most nominations with eight, including Worst Couple (John Travolta and anyone on screen). Other nominees include Blair Witch 2, Little Nicky and The Next Best Thing. Online polls seem to think that Battlefield Earth will sweep, taking away more Razzie gold than any other film and possibly surpassing Showgirls to become the all-time Razzie champion. Sylvester Stallone holds the most Worst Actor awards (8) and is nominated for the 23rd time this year for Get Carter, which is also up for Worst Remake or Sequel. Competition in this category includes Leonardo DiCaprio, 1998 Razzie winner for Titanic. Madonna joins the list of rock-stars-tumed actors-tumed-Razzie-nominees (if you guessed Courtney Love, then you guessed right). While the Oscars appear to be wide open this year, the Razzies seem to be locked down by the big budget bomb Battlefield Earth, but there could be some surprises. Perhaps Arnold Schwarzenegger, always the bridesmaid, can hope to be a bride this year. No matter who wins or loses, though, all the nominees can be confident in their inabilities. The 21st Annual Razzie Awards will be announced on March 24. Nominations and results can be seen at www.razzies.com. What in j blue blazes could this be? The answer lies ; in one name: Colonel Jeffrey Pur'oemickel. Here’s the scoop: v. hris Slusarenko, former member of ■ indie groups Sprinkler and Svelt, wrote a story about the Colonel, sent off different pieces of his story to his friends and each delivered an original track about the Colonel. So what we have here is a compilation/concept album. My first question is, how does one guy know so many great bands and artists? My second question is, how could such <ui abstract story mid idea turn out so damn marvelously? Having sent my check to Slusarenko, I am a proud owner of this elusive album (signed by the Colonel himself), and I’m amazed. After a brief prologue tune from J Gi’T^ard (who provide all the album’s “incidental music”), Guided By Voices usher in the story with “Titus and Strident Wet Nurse (Creating Jeffrey).” This could easily be their best rock song since “I am a Tree.” Its reprise, “Destroying Jeffrey,” closes the album, but in between, we find some fine efforts from a hodge-podge of some of indie rock’s best. Stephen Malkmus gets possessed by drum machines, tape loops and vocal distorters in his contribution (I had to do a double take to make sure it was him the first time I heard it). It’s a stark deviation from his work with Pavement and as a solo artist, but interesting, to say the least. The divorcee duo Quasi (made up or divorced couple Janet Weiss and Sam Coomes) offer a pulsating, heartfelt pop song that could win you over if you’ve never heard their music before. Giant Sand frontman Howe Gelb delivers a brief and trite offering that sounds-like he put all of 15 minutes into the effort. What’s remarkable is that you’re humming the song long after you’ve moved on. The Minus Five (this time it’s Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck) offer a Pet Sounds/Magical Mystery Tour-inspired pop song with a cool vocal effect over McCaughey’s lyrics and a schizophrenic hurricane of psychedelic elements, riffs Langston see page 6 Special to The Gamecock . Battlefield Earth received the most Razzie Award nominations, with eight. The “winners” will be announced March 24. A series of three Eminem dolls will hit stores in July, said Carlos Espada, spokesman for Art Asylum, the Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company that’s designing the toys. One is a low-key version of the rapper as Marshall Mai hers, his real name, dressed in a puffy white jacket. A second doll depicts Mathers as his alter ego, “Slim Shady,” wearing a hockey mask ;uid carrying a chain saw — which doesn't work. “We haven’t perfected that yet,” Espada joked Tuesday. Details of the third doll were still in the works.
