%\\t ©amecock Phish frontman performs solo by Rob Seal The Gamecock If you’re an avid conceitgoer, there was only one place to be Saturday night in in Columbia. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio performed at the Township jm Auditorium, the next-to-last stop jffl on his solo tour. Phish, one of the largest fj. touring forces in American music, ME didn’t tour this season because of their temporary hiatus, and it allowed Anastasio an opportunity « to do his own thing throughout the * Southeast. Phishheads definitely weren’t disappointed by Anastasio’s set list. He played a few Phish favorites, but the majority of his two-set performance was comprised of new material and cover songs. During his acoustic encore, Anastasio broke into a simplified version of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever,” laughingly proclaiming John Lennon as “totally underrated.” One thing setting Phish a step ahead Special to The Gamecock Phish frontman Trey Anastasio performs at the Township Auditorium this past Saturday. of their jam-band competition is the amazing relationship the band has with its fans. This was especially true at the Anastasio show. Calls of “We love you, Trey!” and “Thank you!” rang in the audience throughout the show. Anastasio’s fans had come to see him K. perform and UP1 -**&%■**££. weren’t be distracted by the usual antics encountered at laige concert events. Accompanied by a three-piece horn section, a bassist and a drummer, Anastasio lit up the Township with his prolific guitar work. Covering everything from Bob Marley to 1960s-style soul, Anastasio and his friends brought a diverse array of musical styles to the stage, delivering it all with enough energy and enthusiasm to rock the crowd. Anastasio, with his usual humility and poise, thanked the crowd at the beginning of his encore set for their support of him and his band. The last song he played was an acoustic piece he had written this past year but had not yet performed. It’s hard to capture the energy and mood of music in words, but the piece was absolutely moving. By watching Anastasio perform, it was obvious what the purpose of this show was. He was there to have a good time without the expectations and demands of a major Phish tour. He brought his own enjoyment and love of music to everyone in the auditorium and delivered one of the best concert performances I’ve ever seen.
