lEhc (Samecock Earth Fare from page 6 Earth Fare is not just a grocery store; it sells other goods such as skin care products, incense, candles, per fume, diet supplements, and books and videotapes about Yoga. This shows that “going organic” is a lifestyle about living healthy and being aware of one’s well-being. “My wife and I have been vege tarians since 1993. We decided it was a better way to eat,” Homer said. The healthy living theme is also maintained at Earth Fare, as profes sional masseuse Carol Goff offers mas sages on a special chair for one dollar a minute. What about the wallet? As organ ic foods are chemical-free, one might think they’re cheaper than conven tionally grown foods. But this is not necessarily true. “We pay more money for better quality, in fact,” he said. David Ramsaur, a USC first-year MFA graduate student, hopes prices will go down. “Organic food is the way for the future,... and if more and more people buy organic food, the prices will decrease,” he said. The debate is still on for pro or con GEO, or genetically engineered organisms. There are factors other than health involved, such as the econom ic and political aspects of it. Yet, popular knowledge and the increasing awareness of stores like Earth Fare seem to indicate organic foods might be present in our every day lives of the future. Group to help seniors at fair by Erin O’Neal The Gamecock Deep within the lower level of the Russell House lies the heart of USC’s community service organizations, which of fers such opportunities as helping senior citizens at the up coming South Carolina State Fair. Coordinator Tim Miller stresses the need for lots of vol unteers. “One day, a few hours, but they need a lot of peo ple.” USC’s service program staff approaches individual stu dents as well as USC oiganizations at ask for volunteers to take on projects such as One Shot at the state fair with elderly citizens. The One Shot program is for those students who don’t have time to commit themselves once a week to any partic ular community service. One Shot promotes participation for one day or a few hours of service activities to help the el derly. “Some of [the elderly] can’t go or need help getting around. This program’s goal is to try and match up a student and an elderly citizen so they can learn from each other and have a good time at the fair,” Miller said. “We believe that these people who are seventy, eighty, however many years, have experienced things in life that 20 year-old college students haven’t. They have a lot of wisdom and knowledge that we should tap into and leam from,” Miller said. “They don’t get much attention, and often times they’re lonely,” said freshman business major Bobbie Wof ford, who has signed up for One Shot’s outreach to Colum bia’s senior citizens. “It’s a good way to help them out,” Wofford said. Miller’s hope is that the Office of Community Services and the One Shot program will become resources for orga nizations to use in finding events of interest and that they will eventually adopt them as their own. “We’ll just keep an ongoing list of all the big events that are coming up for agencies and that the student oiganizations . will just take them and run with them,” Miller said. The One Shot state fair event has been divided into two shifts on one date, Wednesday, Oct. 11. The first runs from 12-2 p.m. and the second from 2-4 p.m. Buses are sched- . uled to pick up participating students in front of the Russell House on Greene Street at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Students are welcome to stay for both shifts. The state fair isn’t the only option available to students; many One Shot events are being continuously scheduled. Lists of upcoming One Shot events can be found in the De partment of Student Life in the lower level of the Russell House. The spotlight desk can be reached at gamecockspotJight@hotmail.com.
