■_Gamecock Sports_ Equestrian The USC equestrian team, led by freshman Karin Murray,, finished second and third at two Wfestem shows on Jan. 22 at a show at Auburn Uni versity. Murray led the Gamecocks by finishing sec ond in her first Intermediate Horsemanship class competition and won her second class. Sophomore Britt Mooney won the advanced Horsemanship class in the Gamecocks first show. USC riders Ruth Sorrel and Mundy Bums both got second in the Open Horsemanship. Berry College won both shows and Georgia was second in the first show. Carolina’s in-state ri val Clemson tied for fourth in the first show and a third behind Berry and USC in the second show. Hie Gamecocks are in action again Saturday in the Tournament of Champions in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Carolina will host the Zone Five Region Two Intercollegiate Horseshow on Feb. 12. Mm’s tennis The USC men’s tennis Winter Invitational is set to take place at the USC Fieldhouse today through Sunday. The tournament will include Auburn and Lander, who has won the NCAA Di vision II championship seven years running. LSU’s women are ranked No. 1, while Arkansas continues to reign as No. 1 on the men’s side. Individually, USC is No. 1 in four events on the NCAA Indoor Track and Field list and are in the top 10 in five other events. After ending the 1999 season with a record of 49-21, USC ended last season with a USA TodayftiFCA ranking of No. 19. The Lady Gamecocks are one of only two Southeastern Conference teams that earned preseason rank ings. The 1999 SEC Champion Tigers of LSU are ranked No. 7 in the pre-season poll. De fending national champion UCLA begins the 2000 season where it ended in 1999 with the No. 1 spot. The Bruins received 25 of the 27 first place votes. This year’s schedule will test the 2000 squad early. The Lady Gamecocks begin the season in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 11-13 at the Fiesta Bowl Classic. USC will face Texas A&M, No. 4 Arizona, No. 3 Fresno State, No. 9 Ari zona State and Tennessee-Chattanooga. In 1999, USC had a 2-1 record against these teams, including a 1-0 win against Fresno State when the Lady Bulldogs were No. 1. Top 25 Sports All eight of USC’s spring sports are ranked in the top 25 nationally. Six of the eight teams are ranked in the top 15. On Thursday, spring sports teams held their annual media day to talk about the prospects for the upcoming season. South Carolina is heading into the season with high expectations in each sport. For the first time in school histo ry, each of the teams are coming in with a preseason ranking in the top 25, in cluding six in the top 15. Men’s golf is entering the 2000 cam paign ready to make a run for the NCAA championships. Carolina’s top returning players include two-time All-American senior Eric Ecker and two-time all-SEC juniors Kyle Thompson and" John Bloom field, the holder of USC’s .tournament record. “We have a good chance to im prove on our 11th place ranking,” Coach Puggy Blackmon said. Women’s golf is coming off a final ranking of No. 13 in the nation a year ago. This year’s team is poised to contend for an Southeastern Conference champi onship with six returning starters. Senior Emma Lofgren is the team’s top scorer and has played ir. every tour nament since she arrived at USC. The team also bolsters several freshmen play ing a large role in the team’s future, in cluding Kristy McPherson and Kacy Thompson. “We have a great mix of experience and youth,” Coach Kristi Coggins said. Coggins received SEC coach of the year honors in 1999. The softball team has their eyes set on returning to the NCAA tournament for the 10th time in coach Joyce Compton’s 14 seasons at USC. Last year the Gamecocks complet ed the season ranked No. 19 in the nation and appeared in the NCAA regionals. Sophomore pitcher and All-Ameri can candidate Megan Matthews is the team’s ace. Last season she compiled a 1.32 era witha29-15 record. Senior short stop Kendra McCutcheon anchors a vet eran infield that has three senior starters. The team will have an early test when they venture to play a tournament in Phofinix that features three teams that competed in the Women’s College World Series last season, Entering his 16th year as coach of the Gamecock men’s tennis team, Kent De Mars is looking to return to the NCAA tournament for the 14th time. This year’s squad is led by co-captains Jeff Berman and Guillaume Legat. USC is entering this season ranked No. 14 in the country. The team has goals of competing for an SEC championship and advancing far into the NCAAs. Women’s tennis will begin their sea son Feb. 5 against College of Charleston and Davidson. South Carolina’s winingest coach, Arlo Elkins, begins his 17th sea son in charge of the women’s tennis pro gram. This season they come in ranked No. 13 in the nation. For the first time, all USC returning players begin the sea son nationally ranked The track & field team looks to con tiue its success from last season, under two-time National Coach of the Year Cur tis Frye. Carolina’s women are the de fending SEC outdoor champions and come into the season ranked No. 4 in the na tion. The men come into the season ranked No. 15 and are led by three-time NCAA champion and eight-time SEC champion Brad Snyder along with three time NCAA champion and five-time SEC champion Terrence Trammell. After winning the SEC Eastern Di vision and narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament, the baseball team is ready to make a run to return to the playoffs. The Gamecocks begin their season Feb. 4 against Charleston Southern. “I am excited about the season,” head coach Ray Tanner said. Tanner’s team is expected to be lead by its pitching staff, featuring preseason All-American Kip Bouknight and junior Peter Bauer. Also joining the rotation is sophomore Chris Spigner. First-round draft choice Drew Mey er will anchor USC’s infield. The fresh man shortstop turned down the L. A. Dodgers to come to USC.
