_Sports__ Carolina blanks Arkansas, crushes LSU by Shannon Rooke Staff Writer Dominating a Southeastern Con ference-packed weekend, the Lady Gamecocks defeated the Lady Razor backs of Arkansas 1 -0 Friday and then went on to crush the Tigers of LSU 8 1 Sunday. Senior Mindy Sanders led the Gamecocks in points for the week end with three goals and three assists. She scored the lone goal in the match against the Lady Razorbacks in the sec ond half. After a slow first half and some initial domination by Arkansas, the Gamecocks came back from their half time talk more energized and ready to play. “We came into the game know ing that they were going to push us,” sophomore Morgan McIntyre said. “But coach [Christopher] makes adjustments > really well for us, and she told us that we need to switch the ball more and quicker.” The Gamecocks’ score came in the 56th minute when freshman Becky Leeper sent a through ball behind the defense that Sanders collected. Sanders beat two defenders and placed the ball past Razorback goalkeeper Megan Bals. Sanders was pleased with the team’s play in the second half. “At halftime, coach told me to stay as wide as I could, and that’s how I got the through ball from Becky,” Sanders said. “We knew that they were pack ing players on one side, so we wanted } to work on switching the ball second half.” The Gamecocks held onto the lead and finished the game looking forward to their matchup with LSU. “Wfe should be able to take them if we play like we did in the second half,” Sanders said. “Every win is big right now, and it’d be great to come away from this weekend 2-0.” Sanders and her teammates didn’t come away disappointed, rolling over LSU by seven goals and outshooting them 31-5. (Position) Leslie Lamb got 1 the scoring started in the second minute of the game with a pass from Sanders, which she shot from the 3-yard line. Five minutes later McIntyre added hei name to the score board when she received a ball from Lamb and placed it behind the keeper. Other Game cocks who helped with the total score were Suzanna Keenan, Kini ka McAalpine, Megan Gutstadt and Brooke McPartland Sanders had two more goals, which tied her for the record of most points in a sin gle match. “I didn’t even know that I did that,” Sanders said with a smile. “But I want to give all the credit to my teammates for their perfect passes.” Head coach Sue Kelly couldn’t have been happier with Sanders’ play. “She’s a coach’s dream,” Kelly said. “And she’s contributed so much to the program in her time here.” After Friday’s game, the Gamecocks wanted to come out Sunday with initial speed and score as soon as possible. “We had an objec tive to score within the first eight minutes, or we would have to do pun ishment runs,” Lamb said “Wfe ended up scor ing two.” For the weekend, Kelly was only too pleased with the play of her team, which next faces Fur man on Thursday at the Graveyard. “We are very happy to win the games that we know we’re capable of winning,” Kelly said. “We knew that it would be difficult to put games together back-to-back. But we played confident and stayed focused.” Mentally, this year’s team is stronger than it has been in the past, Sanders said. “These wins were great for our con fidence as a team,” Sanders said. “As our confidence continues to grow, we’ll continue to win. We lacked this kind of confidence in the past years.” Through it all, the Gamecocks look forward to the competition coming up in the next few weeks. “Wfe’re just looking to keep the dis cipline and work rate going,” Lamb sad. “And remember to score^early” ^ '..”■ :■-' - ..&<*...*.f._wm_\______i_—_s-»..—<-s-1 Sean Rayford photo editor Forward Becky Leeper battles for a header in front of Lousiana State’s goal in Sunday’s 8-1 Lady Gamecock win.
