Stu (Continued from Page 1) Harpootlian and Tim Rogers proposes to dissolve SCSSL . A mimeographed sheet was passed out to delegates which states these reasons for the action: "It has been contended that SCSSL has considerable per suasive authority with the South Carolina General Assembly. An analysis at the history of the SC SSL shows this argument invalid, however; most of the legislation for which SCSSL claims credit has been relatively safe legislation which would have been enacted by the General Assembly with or without SCSSL support. "SCSSL has been used ex tensively, however, to promulgate upon the public at large the un founded impression that there is significant student input into South Carolina's political and govern mental systems. SCSSL has, in the process, been used to enhance the image of certain politicians and political parties, while doing little to further students' political Charity beg Carolina Cares, now in Its third year, began Its student drive today. In the next few days nearly all the USC students will be contacted and asked to work on the fund raising program slated for Dec. 1. Carolina Cares was begun as a freshman project three years ago and has blossomed into one of the fastest growing charity plans on campus. Last year over 400 student volunteers collected over $15,000 in clothing, food, money and toys. This tripled the total from the year before. Students collected in neighborhoods all over Columbia and stood on street corners to ask for "You Namne It We Framne It" T HE H OUSE Os 2@,000 PICTLRE P9 -MES 3 12 7 IUnwood Ave. 252-8235 dent legisle interests or ideals. "The structure and tradition of SCSSL have actually done much to keep students divided and diverted. SCSSL invariably degenerates into sophomoric in tercollegiate rivalries, in the formal sessions, and is well recognized as only an excuse for a week of unhampered socializing for many student government elitist types who invariably attend. "The passage of the 26th Amendment to the United States Constitution, guarantees to almost all college students the right to vote in all elections. Students no longer need to play at political involvement or be content with paternalistic treatment by the state's political and governmental leaders. "Obviously, there is a crying need in South Carolina for the progressive influence of a responsible, effective student political coalition. There is no need for the continued existence of the rins drive contributions from motorists. This year the expanded Carolina Cares program is expected to attract over 800 students from USC to help the needy of Columbia. Collected materials will go to the Metropolitan Educational Foundation, Toys for Tots, The Wilkerson Home for girls, the Salvation Army and the Columbia Urban League. Students are needed to collect materials, answer phones and count money in nearly every kind of job. 33: A S'] D] Char-ge Aeeant $100 RITTO\ Lture co-operative, ineffective luxury which is presently SCSSL. Indeed, its continued existence is coun terproductive to the cause of progressive political change in South Carolina." A third propQsal, presented by the members of the Winthrop Delegation calls for a middle of the road change. Janet Jones of Winthrop said, "I think the place to start is the middle. I say do something that looks hopeful and innovative to keep SCSSL alive." She said that SCSSL should recommend only four or five bills to the South Carolina General Assembly and then. push to get them through with the backing of students on the campuses. Concert Committee sweating "If we lose on the Guess Who, we're finished," said Tom DiFiglio, chairman -of the University Union Concert Committee. DiFiglio said that the Concert Committee lost a lot of money on the Lightfoot and McKen dree Spring concerts and that the committee had to make money on this concert to have a spring concert series. DiFiglio said that a rumor was circulating that the Guess Who-Gypsy concert was sold out. He said that this was not true and that "there are plenty of good seats still available." "We want to book Frank Zappa and the Mothers of In vention for a concert and also B.B. King and Curtis Mayfield for a concert," DiFiglio said. He said that if the response for the Guess Who was big enough, the committee would go ahead and book Zappa and King. tomai &Sonj 2 MILLWOOD AVE CROSS THE ['REET FROM REHER HIGH SCHOOL. 252-9178 PS 'Playboy' ope "The Playboy of the Western World" opens tonight and runs through Friday at Drayton Hall.
