AND THE NEWS __8 Vol. LXX-No 46 WINNSBORO. S. C. FRIDAY, MAY 31, 1918 .Etbihd14 FAIRFIEL) COUNTY DOUBLES QUOTA! NEARLY ALL OF DISTRICTS HEARD FiAOM. MORE THAN EIGHTEEN THOUS AND DOLLARS RAISED DU RING THE WEEK. One of the greatest campaigns that has ever been waged in Fairfield coun ty has just ended with a complete vic. tory. If every section of the United States had responded as liberally to the call for funds for the American Red Cross, three hundred millions of doRais would have been subscribed. This county was asked for seven thousand dollars. The reply was more than eighteen thousand dollars and ev gry dollar of it was given freely and without a murmur. The people are beginning to catch the spirit of the movement, beginning to realize what it is all about and the great need, and as a -result they are giving with a lib erality that was unheard of before this time. The plan of districting the county and apportioning the amount to be raised to the several districts proved to be one of the best in the matter of raising money. Another of the outstanding features of the campaing was the amazing results of the meetings held in the different sec tions of the county.r. So far as is known every district that held a meet ing of the people and had speakers to present the needs of the Red Cross more than doubled the-allotment. The only districts that fell below twice what was asked of them were those districts where no meetings were held and there is every reason to believe that these districts would have come across if they had heard the needs of the Red Cross as presentde by speakers at the different meetings held in the county. The following is a list of the dis tricts showing the apportionment and the amount raised. In some instances these figures may not be absolutely correct as all returns are not authen tic, but substantially they are cor rect. The apportionment by districts gives it at a much larger figure. This came about on account of the figures being made larger so> that the excess in certain districts might make up any lacking in others. PEOPLE RESPOND LIBERALLY RED CROSS CAMPAIGN ONE OF EDUCATION. During the past week-a number of meetings have been held over the county in the interest of the Red Cross War Fund campaign, and all of them have been well atended and a great deal of interest shown by the people on all sides. There is every reason. to believe that these meetings are proving of great value to the people from an educational standpoint as they are giving information along the lines of what the Red Cross is doing and the great needs of the organiza tion. From the result wherever - meeting was held it is the general opinion that if the war continues and one or two more such campaigns are held the people will have become so well informed on the needs of the Red Cross that all that will be needed will be .simply to state that so much morey is needed and the county will give it at once without any special effort being made. The people are realizing that the, Red Cross is their Red Cross and that it is necessary that they support it. Meetings were held at Jenkinsville, Monticello, Salem, Lebanon, Green brier, Cool Branch, White Oak, Wood ward,- Mitford, and Blairs. Speakers from Winnsboro were sent to all of these places. The writer attended the meetIng at Mitford and Blairs and is in position to say from first hand knowledge that the people of these sections are wide awake to the im portance of the situation. At Mitford one of the most attentive audieiices of .the 'county listened to addresses by Messrs Wolling and SeawelL, at the conclusion of which the amount asked of the district was more than sub scribed and there were still a large number of people to be-seen. Another of the splendid mneetings was the on6 held at Blaris Saturday afternoon. The meeti was held in the store of the Blair-Frazier Compa 'r.y, and was attended by a large crowd of the people of that section. Four addresses of unusual force were de livered. The speakers in order, were: Prof. Rucker of the University -facul ty, Mr. Kimball, an attorney of Co lumbia, Mr. Seawell, editor of The News and Herald, and Mr. J. W. Han ahan, of Winnsboro. At the' conclu sion of ~ these speeches subscriptions were taken. The quota asked from the district was three hundred dollars. Within a few minutes mdre than dou "ble that amount .hiad been rkised. The Itotal reported from.that oje meeting 'alone was six hundred and eighty 'eight dollars.' Quite a good deal more was raised after the meeting and later reported to the central committee. John .M.
