The surgeon had previously given instructions to several neighbors how to proceed. The procession had scarcely moved a dozen yards, when a person stopped to impure who they were carrying to the grave ? “Mr. , our late and worthy- overseer.” “What is! the old rogue gone at last ? A good release for a greater v illain never lived.” The imaginary deceased no sooner heard this attack on his character, than ho jumped up, and in a threatiiiug pos ture said,— “You lying scoundrel, if I was not dead. I’d make you suffer for what you say; hut as it is, I am forced to sub mit.” He then quietly laid down again; but ere they bad proceeded halfway to church, another party stopped the pro cession witli the same inquiry, and ad ded invective and abuse. This was more than supposed the corpse could hear; and jumping from the coffin was in the act of following his defamers, when the whole party burst into an immoderate tit of laughter, the public exposure awakened him to a sense of his folly and he fought against the weakness, and in the end, conquered it. A friend ofonrs relates the follow ing story, which is a good one: A traveling whom we afterwards knew, once arrived at a village inn af ter a hard iluy’a travel, and living very tired, requested a room to sleep in but the landlord said they were entirely full, and it was utterly impossible to accommodate him—that his wife had to sleep on the sofa, and himself on the floor ; but thal he would see what his wife w ould do for him. The woman, on being apylied to said that there was one room which he might oecuy, pro vided ho would agree to Uie conditions viz : to enter the room iate in the dark and leave in the morming, to prevent scandal, as the room was occupied by a lady. This he a agreed to. About two o’clocft that night, an awful,,noise was beard in the bouse and our friend, the traveler was found tumbling heels ov<u head down stairs.
