kindred measures, having ever seen the light. Free discussion has never been had before the people, because it was known by the ultraists that their con demning voice would have silenced the fiery clamor. The people are satisfied and happy, feeling that they are now se cure in their rights, that the cloud that hung so gloomily over us has been dis persed and has passed away, and they ore now basking in sunshine of pros perity unparalelled, and require no change in the existing order of things and desire none. When the sentiment of the whole people shall be made known, it will be found that they stand side by side with Virginia, believing that sufikient occa sion has not yet been given TO the South to justify her in withdrawing from the Union, much less that this State alone should resort to secession, regardless of the consequences, under the delusion that the other Southern States would be dra gooned into our defence, It will not do to say that the people of South Carolina have acquiesced in the doctrines of secession. It is true that most of the public press, and the State Rights ^sociations have approved them, and have created a sort of spurious pub lic sentiment, by pretending to act for and in the UMUe of the jieople. It is notori ous that" at the late meetings of those As sociations, for appointing delegates to the late Convention in Charleston, wi re in many places but thinly attended, and in a^t%djoining District containing near two. thousand voters, I was informed by an eye-witness there were not more than twenty-five ffesent in the meeting, not withstanding Ifrwao* public day and sev eral hundred people were in the street. The fact is the people are not concern ed, they see no cause of rash proceeding, feel confident that the fugitive slave law will be pjpjcutoi in spite of the opposi- tionjt inS? encounter from the fanatics of the North. Previous to the passage of the measures of adjustment, alias the compromise bills, by the last Congress, the people of the whole south were just ly excited, and had not an adjustment baen effected, erj have gone f< «T But passed as if not the i on rice, and wild beasts would rove w here corn and cotton now plentifully reward the labors of the planter. Desolation would overspread our now prosperous and happy State, and she would be forced by necessity to seek admittance into that Union from which she shall have so rash ly withdrawn herself. These things should be considered well by the whole people, who should hesitate long before they are drawn into the sup port of measures of such momentous interest as that of secession. I feel confident that I speak the senti ments of a majority of the whole people, as future events will soon conclusively prove. “ONE OF THE PEOPLE.” EFFINGHAM DIVISION Son« of TcmpcraiM-?, will mve a Public Meeting and Celebration, on the 4th of July next at Effingham. The secessiontsts have not, it appears to me, reflected much upon the future condition of South Carolina, in case of her withdrawing from the Union unsus tained by her sister States, but have de luded themselves with the idaa that if any difficulty should arise with the Gen eral Government, that the whole South would fly to her succor; which I very much doubt from Uie very best of rea sons^ viz.: the position the other South ern States have assumed. If South Carolina secedes she will doubtless be alone; and it may not be irrelevant to inquire what will be her condition, a ques tion which every seceesoinist should en deavor to answer, to himself, at least.— Bad as our situation may be now, it be hooves prudent men tonpnder well upon the effect of a change of the existing po litical relations of this State.
