0 day a breeze springs up, and while ft: Ike •hade a delightful couhteoe is the result. The breeze generally continues all night, lulling towards morning. Clothing of broadcloth I do not dud at any time inconveniently warm, and fre quently at night it is so cool that I am forced to take off a thin coat, and put on a thick one. Before I left South Carolina, the idea of musquitoes, sand flies, ticks and red bugs was associated with the nameof Flor ida. But I have not yet been seriously incommoded by theag insects—in some localities you see Mt g single musquitoe or sand fly. This is a great jiftor-Juan's country.— The hammock land, which is the only land tit for cultivation, generally lies in small bodies, many of the hammocks not containing more than 30 or 40 acres. A wealthy man. finds considerable difficulty it getting a hammock large enough for landlord, Mr. Dehart, and on the 22d we started on mules to go over to the coast. A description of our travels by land, however, I will reserve for my next letter. Before I close this lengthy epistle I will mention a fact which is very remarkable; which is, that on the whole of the St. Johns river, and the whole region of East Florida, it is perfectly healthy.— Such a disease as billious or congestive fever is unknown; I am told that per sons do very rarely have chill and fever, but only alter great exposure. There are a few physicians on the river, but they have abandoned their professions, and are now engaged in planting. This is a delightful climate even at this season of the year, (which is perhaps the warmest;) 1 have not yet fouud it unpleasantly hot, except when exposed to the direct rays of the sun. 'About nine o’clock every his force. The land in the hammocks are as rich as any lands in the world, but the pine lands ore poor—so poor that I very much doubt if they will ever be cultivated. But though the laud is very sa ndy, yet it is covered with grasses, upon which large herds of cattle keep fat all tha year round. In many parts of the country, on the pine barrens, there is a thick but dwarf growth of trees of various kiudr, which go by the name of etevniciai scrub; this scrub does not grow more j than from six to ten feet high, but boars a great quantity of acorns, nuts and her- i ries, upon which bears, deer, birds, tur keys, hogs, and other animals, keep fat in 1 all seasons. The most unobservant person in trav elling through this part of Florida, can not but perceive that here, to the active aud energetic, there aotmany roads lead ing on to fortune. Cwon, tobacco, su gar, and fruits of many kinds, all grow here luxuriantly. The timber business is also very profitable, and there are now many persons on the river engaged in it. I have met in Florida many South Car olinians, who now reside here; all of them glory in the position which our State now holds; ad approve highly of the resolu tions and the address adopted by the Con vention of Southern Rights Associations recently held in Charleston, and several i of them have expressed themselves thus: | ? Some Southern State must take the ■ lead in resistance to federal aggression— 1 South Carolina may lead off perhaps bet- j ter than any other. Let her secede and many Southern men will flock to her standard. The sons of Carolina, though years may have elapsed since theydeft their#ative State, will all return to their mother, to protect her in the hour of her need." Yours Sic., H. same time. The shipments to North ern porta show h falling off of 106,202 hales. The stocks on hand at all the ; ports are 44,131 hales less than those ; of last year at the same period- Crops &c.—In Alabama.—The Huntsvills Advocate of the 21st May says; The very warm weather with which we have been favored for the last ten days has effeuted a most wonderful change in the appearance of the crops. Better stands of cotton were never known, and the plant looks hardy and thiifty. Com looks well. Wheat is very promising and so arc oats. A little rain, however, about this time, would help matters, and cause everything to grow with more rapidity and vigor. There is much complaint of raiu in this section, several weeks having elaps ed since we had a respectable shower Corn and cotton arc suffering by this drought, and the gardens are complete ly parched up. For some days past die heat has been excessive for this season : and at the present writing, there are no indications of rain. 'Flic Selma Enterprise of May 22d, says; During the last two weeks the weath er has been very warm and dry. As yet the corn and cotton crops have suf fered hut little for want of rain, and they present at the present time fine prospects, when die cold weather of the early part of the spring is consplered.- Rain however, is wanted.
