[for TH* DARLISGTOK FLA(f] Mr. Editor: I had the pleasure of witnessing one of the most lovely scenes at this place, about ten days since, that lias burst upon my vision for a long time past On the 7th May, just as Sol was shedding bis last soft rays upon the tops of the green pines that form a beautiful grove on the western side of the Marion Academy, a lovely band was seen advan cing towards a rustic throne that had been feared for the reception of their youthful Queen of May. Never can t forget the pleasant thrill of excitement that pervaded my bosom on that inno cent »ad lively fag|lral occasion, with the little girls of Marioti village. Their brows were wreathed with Jiie flowers and buds of the most delicate tpxtujre, plucked from the rich flower gardens of the flower-lov- The Provision crops of Florida may now be considered as made, and will yield a rich reward to the planter. Cotton is not doing so well but still presents an ex cellent prospect. Rains have been mode rate and abundant in the interior. Louwiaha.—The Lake Providence Re publican of May 10 says: We are informed by one of our planters that there is generally a pretty good stand of Cotton throughout our neighborhood. The continued dry weather has had a bad effect both on the corn amtootton crop. Cm oUhe X hoi.f.r a.—The Cincinnati Commercial « 16th instant says: There were four ca^>s of cholera repor ted to the Township Trustees, yesterday morning; two at the corner of Everett and Linn streets. The persons attacked were a mother and her daughter, recently ar rived from Ireland by way of New Orleans. The daughter died on Wednesday night, and the mother was considered past re covery, yesterday morning. A man whose name we did not learn, died at the Hos pital on Wednesday night of cholera. He was recently from New Orleans. Dr. Smith reported a case in his practice; we were unable to get the particulars. The last Township Trustees’ contained two q^ther cases. ^ American Newspapers—The follow ing paragraph will explain itself. Capt. Ppore wishes to collect a copy of every mg tidies of this place. They were all tastefWIy dressed, thereby telling the sto ry of the interest their mothers and friends had taken in their appearance on the oc casion ; yet this was not all to excite ad miration. O, no; i^was not half. They were condueted ailpg by their kind and praisewortlij^tgacher, who looked on most lovingl^ And who opened the scene by singing in chorus with the little girls, a single verse. Master Edward Harli.f.e then addressed the youthful throng, the Queen and the company, repeating a beautiful piece of poetry, composed for the occasion by his aunt, the gifted Maina. Miss M. A. Graham, who bore the lovely May pole, decorated with a wreath of floWm, a flag floating on the top of it with the significant device for the occa sion on it, made an address to Spring, in a clear and soft voice, which was respond ed to by Miss Zeltie Millar, a lovely- little girl, representing that season. Miss «i. then addressed Summer, and Miss W. Wheeler, who represented Summer, re sponded. Miss G. then addressed Au tumn, and Miss C. Livingston, who rep resented Autumn,, responded. Miss G. then addressed Winter, and Miss M. Car michael, who represented winter, respon ded. They all spake with an elegance, ease and clearness, which at once aston ished and excited the admiration of the attentive audience. Now Flora, (Miss L. Grice) with her airy and tripping man ner came forth with her basket of flow ers and rich bouquets, which she hand somely distributed to the seasons, accom panied with an appropriate address to eSt*h one of them. She then handed to Miss Susan Millar a lovely wreath, to lie handed by her to the Crowner. Miss Miller repeated soiqe interesting and appropriate lines, written also by Moinn, for this occasion. Miss U. G. Kf.li.in made a very lengthy address to the Queen, the Seasons, Flora, and the com pany, concluding by placing the crown in a graceful and pleasing manner upon the QueeirS tend, which was bowed in youthful dignity, to receive it. After Miss Jahusa Evans had received the insignia of her station, she responded in clear tones by repeating the following lines: Meekly may I these vernal gifts sustain. And with fidelity prolong my reign; Gratefhl for all vour favor and your cares. My thanks to all who in our festival shares. And let the feelings of this first of May Surrtre the ephemeral pleasures of a day, And our sweet friendship, formed in ear ly youth, Remain as pledges of eternal truth. The Queen having taken her royal seat, Miss S. J. Evans presented to her a beautiful little sceptre, accompanied by some beautiful lines. Indeed, the whole scene was conducted with an interest which did honor both to the instructress and pupils. All the little girls wdio have not been mentioned addressed the Queen, and pre- J pentei to her beautiful bouquets. They then repaired to thfe Academy, where an elegant and tastefully arranged table was spread with cake and lemonade, of which a good many of the company, together with the juvenile part af the village par took. Florida.—The Tallahassee Floridian of May 17th says: In Florida, so far as we have been aide to learn the crop is at least three weeks behind hand. At this time last year there were blooms, while at the present writing many planters are not yet through chop- e out. Betwixt a succession of the iest washing rains within the memory of the oldest inhabitant, and cold days and nights, the young plants have receiv ed a check from which they will require the most favorable seasons hereafter to recover, tya have conversed with seve ral of our most intelligent planters, who agree as to the r r in the country of the stated dates, we trust that his call will be prompt ly responded to: “Mr, Poore, wishing to form a ptrfrcl collection of American newspapers for the city library of Paris, requests a copy of every daily journal published on the 4th of July, 1851—and of the next pub lished number of every semi-weekly and weekly journal, directed to the ‘American Sentinel, Boston, Mass.’” Editors will please copy the above no tice.
