At this particular season every f timer should be planning his opera ;ioiis for next year. Owing to the un usual conditions that have btei brought about by the drop in th< [irice of cotton, it seenis that no on< oither banker, merchant or farnie teems to know what to do a this time. Now there is no line o ousiness that can afford to stand idli ind see what is going to happen. Thi s especially true of the farmer. W< iave got to act now or we can neve overcome the troubles that we hav< is farmers. It is useless for anyone to say tha the farmers were not warned, no only the first of this year, but fo iges, to adopt a system of safe farm ng. We did not heed this warning hoping in vain that the price of cot ton would hold up. The farmer ha out into this crop every cent that hi las made in the last four years, and n a great many instances, all that hi :ould borrow. I Can say that in thi: lounty there was less acreage plant mI to food stuffs this year than in anj ?rear in twenty. We have not put oui money into food crops; it has beei out into the present cotton crop, ol .vhich 1 am afraid a large portion orobably klf per cent., will be thi held the first day of January, am .vith unfavorable weather, the firs lay ol March. Now we are mail with all the mil people, the banking system, the spec .1 la tors and nearly every other busi ness interest. Have we over looket into our own affairs to see where w< lave placed ourselves after being con tinually warned? Can we blame any ine but ourselves? 1 can truthfully lay, no we can't Now, getting down to business vhat are we going to do about it? Now there can be no argumon lbout there being more money in al rotton as against enough food stuf md feed t.o run every farm and thei ill the cotton you can grow and gath jr. The position which you have plac ?d yourselves in at this moment provi '.hat. Now, in regard to future opera ions, and I want to say right hen that at no time has the Departmen of Agriculture at Washington or th Extension Forces in this State, or an; other State, ever advised the cottoi farmer to quit growing cotton and g Ho into live stock or any other on business, as it would be equally dis WORE PEP FOR THE LAZY MINI Frequently the Only Difference B? tween the Geniu* and the Dullard Lie* In The Condition of the Body The brain is not normally lazy. As I see il the ud| vice to diversify your farming was i good, sound advice, and , I dare sn;., L> | there is not a man with any amount or' r ; good common sense but that will say e so too. i 1 want to say to the ones who are li: able to lose their heads that everyI 5 thing has not gone and will not go to! the dogs. Do your part and every. tiling will come out right in time. What is your part? Nearly everyone who has made a n crop this year has put not only the t- earnings of the last four years into a it, but in many instances has borrowr ed to the limit on it from the local t bank. And the money has been spent. f This ninnpv whs hnrrnwpd witVi Ihii a I understanding that it was to be paid s ' back this fall, some due October 1 a and some later. r Here is where your part comes in. l> You have placed yourself in the hands of your banker. It is your sworn duty to do your utmost to satisfy him. I do t not believe there is a bank in the counr (y that will not meet you half way, or even two-thirds of the way. So look about and see where you stand. Don't sell all your cotton. I'ut it in < s your nearest warehouse and protect e yourself and those whom you owe. And what arc you to do to protect , yourself against this same thing hap- . s pening again? We have been so busy during this f year with the big cotton crop, buy- ^ r ing high-price fertilizer, feed and i food to make it with, that we havn't [ thought much of the future. Cotton has gone down and no food has been , grown to feed on another year, exI cept what has been grown in the ^ North and West, and which you must ( buy with cheap cotton money. We < I have bought the rope, tied the knot and placed our heads in it ami we can rest assured the other fellow will . j do the pulling. Itight now is the time to make our , plans for next year's crop. Every farmer should put in at least live acres of oats to the plow i ^ and they should be put in not later , than November 15, by the last of Oe- , ? tober if possible. In the case of wheat I should say t that every farmer with a family ' 1 should raise enough wheat to feed his F family. Wheat should be put in dur- ] i ing November. As to the cover crop: We too fre quently lose sight of the condition in b which we leave our land during the winter, especially cotton land. Every - acre, if possible, should be seeded to rye, oats or any other crop that will t put on a green cover during the wine ter and furnish a winter pasture. y This cover crop should be put in as n early as possible. You should follow 0 your picking with a large sweep or e harrow. This will protect your soil i- from washing. We have urged every _ farmer to prepare a small plot of 1 land near the lot for a permanent pasture. This should consist of Bermuda grass and Burr Clover. This can be done any month in the year. (Jet your grass roots and put them in the soil any time, covering them deep in the winter and shallow in the sumi mer. ^ mi can put in the Burr Clover is seed at any time but August and Sep tember are the best months, e Now, some will say that the farmer y won't reduce tin* cotton acreage, e That is to be seen. But you can't i- well sin c ed in this if you wait until n spring to plan and set your crop. { r; lien n . <>\v t?> put your surplus land in nn.ii;, something: you can grow | i- with lilabor and fertilizer.
