To find these "stolen" nests is often a long and tedious task, the usual method being to follow each turkey lien as she separates from the flock and starts toward her nest, taking I care that she does not konw she is observed. A much easier and quicker j method than this is to confine the bens early some morning soon after 1 they have come down from roost and let them out late in the afternoon. 1 Those that are laying will then head 1 straight for their nests in order to 1 lay the egg3 they have been holding. If attractive nesting places are prepared about the barnyard, turkey hens sometimes lay in them. In the North where the laying season often begins while there is still snow on the ground, they ure more Ikely to select their nests near home than is the case in the South, an they do not range far during cold woather. wests are easily made from boxes or barels, or by scooping out a little earth in the shape of a shallow bowl and piling brush around it to satisfy the hen's desire for seclusion. Of all nests, however, the one most preferred by turkey hens is a barrel laid on its side and a nest shaped in it with straw or hay, according to United States Department of Agriculture poultry specialists. When only a few turkeys are kept it is the usual custom to allow them free range throughou. the brc ding laying season. If aany turkeys are kept, however, it is usually found mo-I convenient to use breeding pens or inclosures, in which the turkeys are kept until they have laid tiu'ir eggs for the day, letting them out late on each afternoon. Whe 1 confined to a breeding pen turkey h< lis often lay in the same nest, but on free range each hen usually makes her own nest. WHITEWASH MAKES THE HEN HOUSE SANITARY E irly in the Spring, when everything else around the farm is being leaned and put in shape for the summer, a coat of whitewash wiil add greatly to the appearance and sanita.ion of the interior of the poultry louse. It is the cheapest of all paints ind may be used on the exterior of the building, too, if so desired. Whitewash is made by slacking about 10 pounds of quicklime in a pail with 2 gallons of water, covering the pail with cloth or burlap and allowing it to slacke for one hpur. vVatcr is then added to bring out the whitewash to a consistency which may be applied readily. A weatherproof whitewash for exterior surfaces recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture is made as follows: (1) Slake 1 bushel of quicklime in 12 gallons of t v..iter; (2> di: solve 2 pounds of common salt and 1 pound of sulphate of zinc in 2 gallons of boiling water; oour (2) into (1), then add 2 gallons >{ skim milk and . dx thoroughly. Whitewash is spread lightly over the surface with a broad brush. CHICKEN Fl.OCK REQUIRES PLENTY OF FkESH WATER Plenty >I I resit wal'-r should vays be kept accessible to the heris. If supplied irregularly they are likely o drink too much at u time. It should not be exposed to the sun's rays in umnicr nor be allowed to freeze in /inter if tins can be avoided. In very frosty weather it is often worth while to give the flock slightly .vanned water two or three times a Jay rather than permit them to drink vutor i;t the freezing point. A flock of 50 hens in good laying condition vi'l lequire four to six quarts of watr a day, sny pouttry specialists of the United Department of Agricul.ure. TIRE CAME OFF O. K. The unbelievable amount of punishment sustained bv automobile 'ires in speed races when wheels are revolving at the rate of 25 times a .econd when the car is making 100 niles an hour, is not aprcciated by the iverage fan. A remarkable incident ih the recent Los Angeles race brings this point out in a striking manner. Art Klein was eading the field on the lHdrd mile, . leaving the air at 104 miles an hour. Suddenly his right rear wheel collapsed, the steel spokes being iheared off io the lint. Rearing widly, the car >c ram bled craz'ly about on the relains of the wheel, but the fully inlated Goodyear cord lire, perfectly mounted, swept on down the track n the direction the car h?wt t>?on aking. When it finally came to i stop, it was found uninjured. This is the first time that freak performance, demonstrating the ruggedness of tires, has ever been wltness*d during a race. Crecn cut bone, when fed fresh, makes an excellent substitute for jeef scrap in the poultry flock's diet. It must be purchased in small quantities, as it can not be kept fresh for iny length of time, especially in warm veather, and when spoiled may cause >evere bowel trouble. mmmrnmmmmm?mmmmmmmmmmmmn *a i m mi - ? * t ? l? , 1 !
