MONEY TO FARMERS | In a monthly statement it is said | that loans totalling $14,799,800 were made to over 4,000 farmers in the United States in the month of February by the Federal Land Banks. The total amount of loans closed since the establishment of the federal land banks was $182,897,964 on March 1, distributed among 74,384 borrowers. Altogether 179,734 have applied for loans aggregating $471,455,362. This would indicate that farmers have not fared so badly at the hands of Uncle Sam. France figures up that the war cost that country in money twenty-five billion dollars, which does not include loss of property destroyed by the Germans. WHAT ALLEN DOES NOT KNOW Governor Allen, of Kansas, in a IrO t..?- r> l: V vvx.B VV VklV UVUWI v;ai \MIim VjUllUII Association stated that "the cotton froweni of the South in their efforts to limit the acreage of cotton are trading on the misery of the world." What the Governor of Kansas docs Hot know about cotton would fill a cry largo book indeed. He even has the notion that cotton is now bringing 30 cents a pound. The flrat lot of flour imported into Germany sold at $40 per barrel. It Is stated that the flour was not to be used for making bread, but was distributed in pound lots for use in making graviea and other culinary purposes. " The Gorman military establishment, according to the plans of the Peace Conference, is to be cut down to 100,000 men and 4,000 officers, the army to be recruited by the voluntary system for a period of twelve years. This will make Germany's military strength less than that of her little neighbor, Switzerland.' ;'j * ' ' ' ***** NOT SO SLOW The city of Philadelphia has the reputation of being slow and sleepy, at least some of the rival cities say so. But old Philly has started a steam truck to bring in fresh eggs every day for a distance of more than one hundred miles. When a hen cackles over a hundred miles from Philadelphia her egg will be on the city breakfast table next morning. Never again say Philadelphia is slow. A BOOMERANG Frank Simonds, the great war correspondent, says that the opposition in America to the Peace League has made President Wilson stronger than ever in Europe. He writes that the President's Boston speech conquered allied Europe, because it convinced it that Mr. Wilson and his party were fighting Europe's cause in America. On his return he was welcomed as the great American who was fighting for Europe in America and resumed his paramount influence in the peace conference without a single protest. The opposition is proving a boomerang, nnd is coming back to plague his enemies. The German premier in opening the assembly said the watchword of Germany must be "work." They have been working the other nations long enough. It is about time to do some work at home. The fellow who is waiting to write that letter when postage gets cheaper will not have to wait much longer. On July 1st the good old two-cent stamp and the one-cent postal card will come back. The position of umpire to a Southern League was offered to a captain just returned from Europe. He declined with thanks, saying that he had faced death often enough and would quit while the quitting was good. Several seaplanes are being prepared to fly across the Atlantic. REAL AID FOR ROAD BUILDING I The Department of Agriculture promises full co-opralion and assist- | ance in expediting resumption and progress of road building in all parts of the country. Little could be accomplished during the war, although considerable funds for highways were available, but labor was lacking. At i the request of the Secretary of Agriculture a conference has recently been held in Washington of State Highway Commissioners and seventy- ' seven representatives were in atten- ' dence. A canvass taken during the ' conference showed that at least five ' billion dollars will be expended on roads during the next eighteen { months and that the work in hand ' will furnish employment for over a ' hundred thousand ex-service men. 1 This is the first time that such close relationship has been established be- 5 tween State and Federal road build- 1 ing officials nnd it augurs well for the ' public benefit. 1 i I OFFICIAL TRADE MARK OF THE 1919 WAR 8AVING8 STAMPS 1 ?^^^^mmmmm? vmm ifyank ef The Oldest, Large 11 Rank in 4 Per Cent.
