Saturday, July 1G, 1955 Whites, Negroes In Panic Home Sales' TEA NECK, N.J.?ANI1- Negro and white families in Teaneek have organized in an effort to stop panic selling by whites because of the influx "of* Nepro res idents. More than 90 families have signed an agreement not to sell and "not for sale" signs havi^ ap peared in increasing numbers on more and more houses. Negroes began moving into the area two years ago from adjoin-, ing Englewood and thus far 57 families have taken up residence in Teaneek. ?5 The organized campaign t o atop panic selling began several weeks ago. Only 50 families refused to sign the agreement and Some of these, have nut. im "fnr sale"- signs. Others have taken no stand. , . ... --( Th<? panic was created by real estate dealers who went, to white residents' in 'the ara and urged them to sell "while the selling is good." Many white families became angry at the rsheddy tactics and began holding bloc meetings t o crush rumers that property val?pes would decrease because of Negroes in the Neighborhood. Help was received . from the Englewood Urban league, Mi's.' Nide Vhomas, league exccutivo Virginia Still Unde Schdol Integration Hy Carter Jewel RICHMOND/. Va. ?(ANP) "irginia educational officials seem. ? hopelessly split and confused o fv what is best to do in the wake of the U.S. Supreme court's decree ordering dosegration in public schools. In some localities white leaders are. at a loss what^tp / do | to s6e that the children are educated next year i n segregated schools. . On the surtace, it would7socrrr that determined group of white politicians and officials are doing ??? all in their .power to maintain scgregation or h a v e no public schools at all. Hut it by no means certain that this group is acting I for all the white parents con- j cerncd. Not only in Virginia hut in other* southern?communities, thr ! official reaction to the court's de-j scgration order continues to b e in 1 the negative pattern. Williams- j burg, Va. which appeared at one time ready to accept the court order, is now on the vaccilating list. The school board, it appear , VU a VYcci\ irauy tu K ?# ( alone: with the order, hut pressure from other citizens and the ctiy ! council now has the city reneging. ' Last week. Williamsburg councilmen urged the state board of education to presttve segregation. At the same time the James C'jty j county boavc^, of '?upervisors turn ed thumb* Awn'oh a proposal to 1 set up a single school board for : ~ ^Williamsburg Hand-the county un-; til it has assurance that under j tbe rrangement the city would not seek to impose integrated j schools on the county.' Several other localities in Vir- J ginia last week, came out against: integration lft' itfie* public schools. . Each is waiting until the state-1 ment of policy in regard to desegregation is made by the state department 6f education. It has been made clear that state cdu rational officials arc likely t o hold that public education is state business, and that state and local j officials are bound by] the laws of Virginia requiring thci races fiT-frfr educated in separate Schools. ^ Meainwhile, members of the I NAACP legal staff have -already said failure of local officials to make a reasonable start toward desegregation in the fall will be ' fVio Kootfl fna 4U? fi'lJ"'- ? uwn.o AX11 VIIU I Ullll^ I'l Iliuris | suits challenging the segregated school system. We do not want to see a new all-Negro segregated area and we believe that property values will remain high and unaffected if white and Negro families now living here can become fully integratel." The bloc meetings were called by white families "to talk things over and to combat the "sell while the selling is good" propaganda. The campaign was climaxed by the organization of the Tcaheck Civic conference, which is open to both white and Negro fanii nes. Fred Link, chairman _pf the conference, said the prime object ives and activities of neighborhood groups and will show home owners property values in the. area, which range from $18,000 to $28,000, do not decrease because of integration.
