Saturday, October 2, 1937 I Echoes of Sports I BY "BUSTER" LAWSON I It hak*star;ted, the resounds ol | long spiraling punts, the. solui .smack ot' bo?ay blocks, co-eds urag ging o'ut the if game trotting clothes to add color and spirit lor their alma.,mater. For most ot us, football Hares J the first of September, while the coaches' game starts way back m the spring. They are seen "11 over the practice field, beaten by the cold and tear of many worries * during olf season. They are ah ^ ways charting, trying to bring about the rise of lbotoall's climax stars, but .heads ary often Bl'ay before such desire presents- itself. | This year it*?" new faces, newj names?with plenty of grid-wiRe , ' y top-flight veterans to keep F h"e young players from hoggmg ' the great show*. If tl,iis show is hog gedj then the greatest sport of all times will vanish before us. Just to think what, a great- show football has been anil what it is going to be, IT-will give fnu just, a little view of the situation. Today is the day of the b i g game between two great rivals. Fans are coming from everywhere to witness the annual affair.. Mother and Dad will be there, the little sister und brother and prob ably the larger brothers and other relatives who graduated years ago. Eight -thousand are looking on. Forty thousand howling i'oi a touchdown. Another lorty shriek ing to "hold that line." What l'eel .ring'runs through the spine and into every part of the body, just pulling for one thing, your favor; ite team to Come through when you want a touchdown. Then, -v, year in and .year out, memories of that particular game is ^till in your system. Thoughts of it will hr*"g " eh ill Y?fmilintr running, ov er you. That's the feeling of - u sport ian. Last Saturday Swift Junior college turned the table on Claflin College of Orangeburg. ClafMn's jersies are red, but that Junior made their faces redder by defeat ing them 19 to 12.j_ The Swift Junior College performed beautifully. They had fuTm and showed the effect of good training and a great deal of pm'e fundamental .^football. Behind al this, they pas set! a triple threat back, who boot ^ . ' ed the ball for an average of 55 \ yards. Many of his punts went ^ 70 yards. Well here is hoping that a. Claflin pick on something large enough the next openihg season. Benedict College is playing ^ Swift Junioi' College this season undgj- the flood ight>; here is hop . ing that B. C. takes a lesson from what has happened and be pre.. pared for a tough battle. The B. C. Tigers arc priming for the game with Harbison College Saturday Oct. 2. They should takeHarbison by a score of -17 to 0, roughly guessing; hut the illness of Head Coach "Dad" Crawford., may cut their power a little. We all hope that Coach Crawford will be up and at the game. Alien university s xoiiow jac'K ets are primed for their battle with Morris Brown at Ponce IV v Leon field in Atlanta, Oct. 2. It is hard to tell just what the Yellow Jackets have in store, but from the looks of things,, they are going to ptit"up a fight worthwhile seeing. They lost to the Wolverines last year by a score of 20 to^O. Morris Brown was exLpectinjfc^to make a k?ack out of what they termed a very weak rival, but was very much disap-t. pointed in the end. I don't think ~ that they will make that mistake this year, because they likewise are ready for the whistle. Morris Brown will meet a much better team than they met last year. Coach Swinton is Blessed t with a very good number pf suitable, reserves in all departments. At , quarter back we find Belk and Kemp, halfbacks, "Ike" Brown. Pullian, Harris, Edwards, House;; fullbacks, Burgess, Brown and, Jones; ends, Butler, Hallerdale I Jackson, Martin, Thompson Green j and Dowdy; tackles, Brown, Bell U. Barber, Pressl.v, McKenZy and! ?"Bitt" THaTtfr guards, "Borstpee"; Barber, Mishoe, Bennett, Lindsay ; McDonald, C. Thompson and -Brus terr centers, Duckett, Sims, and r ranklyn. Coat, better known as Relk and Pullian will do the most kicking this season, with the assistance of "Ike" Brown and Jesse Kemp. Remember II. C. Harris is also a hooter. Look out Morris Brown, we are coming with the heart of a lion. ' I know you have heard of "Hie" Bell of Minnesota, well he just kicked two .extra points and a field goal aeainst North Dakota last Saturday. Captain Homer Harris and his Iowa Hawkcyes went 'down under the powerful attack of Washington State. Better luck next time Homer. * Ambers was too much of a box) . er for Montanez last Thursday night. Montanez wasn't able to tag the fast boy.
