The Supreme Lodge demanded, taxes of the Grand Lodgc that the local lodges refused to pay. While some had paid some of the taxes, none had. paid all; The -Grand Lodge through its grand chancellor forwarded the taxes paid by those lodges to the supreme chancellor, but it_did not satisfy him suf jr- ficiently to communicate the . semi1 - annual pass word for even those lodges ?-? that' had paid.?IIis reply was, pay the full prorata levied on your state ?-? _ f or this temple which was around f ' $35,000 or no pass" worth South Carolina has always opposed the l'ool representatives voted against it at ajll^?f the supreme grand session. GrwPid Chancellor Brown tried as hard as any other grand chancellor to sell bonds for the temple, but failed. Wp said by our actions we did noC want any temple. The same der-isinn wns nctod put bv us in pav . inf 11'nmlo taxes. We wore right in the stand taken. What benefit is a million dollar, temple in Chicago to subordinate lodges in this state, Is it right for the' poor Negroes of South Carolina to erect a sky Hcraper in a Metropolitan City for" big Northern Negroes to enjoy. No. a 5 thousand time. We don't want any temple when our widows and orphans are ho?v hungry and dothless. li' the so called big Negroes in the~N~orth , i and East want that temple in Cliica" go. they'had' beltei pay for itr?forwe don't want it down here, and not , _ coini? to nav another' n il rent 'on it "Needy Churches'* Not Church When our wonderful lcaier, Bishop, Reverdy C. Ransom came to South Carolina his great vision saw the grave necessity -of inserting a new ' item of "Needy Churches," .'on his conference report blanks. Nothing like it has been recorded in the history of the state. It is really the best thing that ha* ever happened for the gocd of the churches in this Epis copal District. Through this medi?, ._ 'urn from five to five hundred dollars were given to such churches during ?jjk the two years administration of our grand' leader. All churches are willing and anxious to rally for this item If"-*- with?the?hope?that their . turn?faraid will come j-jp&ni it -some time. But a few w^eks ago^l-bme of the lea'Jiers of the state in their zeal for R one church, undertook to rally undo another caption than that suggested br by - -the?bishop,- which -was?-working J to great success. We took the floot Wt j and asked thatjour rally be listed un -- der the same 'thoughtful item .ofj "Needy "(Churches" and allow the greatest amount of the returns to .be given .the church that was in most ne6d. But the leaders of the movefv tnent swayed the? majority, so we Joined in tn help them make the rally a success. We sent a personal, communication to each pastor of our district and made an appeal through the columns of our paper for the state l'o prove to the promoters or the movement that the state will not rally for one church is to note the returns from the effort launched. On; fifteen dollars has made its way tothe treasurer, with little more than one hundred heard of from all sources including fifty dollars by one man in the* form of an announcement. Ol' i course \vr are noi.uiT"ftXl SMi pi ised. For we expected sucji would be the case. Thats why We. look .the opposite position at our conference. In suggesting an appeal for all of the tlilurclU'S' of the slnl. UJIC should not think in terms-i?l* Ins particular church that has no 'debts, heavily insured, well heated and properly, lighted. But he must think of the scores of churches, that are rottening down,. roof all gone, no lights iu the windows with no insurance on them What ever thaf.; must respond to. the same ippt-al. Now its~ut) n*i> t<> say that the pastors ignore j" th? conference order for they- did not. True enough some pastors could not mention it to their eomrreeations when their own churches were under the sheriff's hail: mer. I know of pastors who made urgent appeals in lavoi oT the i and put the first offering on the altar, but the congregation refused to contribute a single "penny? Our only i.nvmrly ig In < .Hit mile QUI' efforts t'p V -dtteedy churches," and apply the result acordingly, allowing the church hat is most needy to get the great est amount.-I)r. Shaw.
