Saturday, May 31, 1930 FAREWELL BANQUET L Tj -? " J '* OiT^Frtflav night. Man 1 Uttr-n? quet was given in honor of the re' tiring white teachers of Benedict col- u ? lege. As it is well known since the founding of Benedict in 1870 there i has been a succession of white presi- ? dents and a, majority of white teach- u suming the role of missionaries, have come among us and labored faithfully ^ and effectively for our uplift. But in 1 the wisdom of the American Baptist Home Mission society, and the pw>vi- v dence jof God, a change in the policy 1 of thio school has taken place, in that *it has been turned over entirely to a Negro president and faculty; And l .since it is contrary to the southern custom, that white teachers, to any 1 appreciable decree. m.' k w , v t. I1UV i iXfgro presidents, henri' th?? change Ru. _ .... ..cause of this change and the fact that at the end of this school term the white teachers will not .return, the alumni association of Benedict college thought it fitting to give this banquet ^ vice among us. . ? The program was very appropriate- _ ' ly arranged and carried out in a very . touching and affective way. Not hav- 11 ing a copy of the prograrw- and writ- s ing this only from tflgWjry It tvmiTrt' " ?-not be well to attempt to continent 1' upon ~tKe~ different addi esses,?but?14-^ -must .say that the occasion was one mingled with a degree of sadness es- *' ?peefa^y when reference was?made of the faithful service rendered by ^ vears. Responses to these addresses were f .... made by members of-the-outgoing-fa- _t eulty which were equally as touching ^ and pledges of ^continued interest in Benedict wherever their lots 'were, y cast. They, with all of us, are proud _ of the great work that has been done in the moral, intellectual, and spiritual growth of our people, and to t know that they and their predecessors h . warn.inntriimpntnl in n large-Jvav in _ this growth was a sense of pride and s their task; so far as the present powork elsewhere, they go away from ns with?the?very highest apprecia- v tion of their labor of love and sacri- f fice for us. ? j... U ~"" And now althoughL?fi?Pgl"ts_a"degreo" _ of sadness at this change there is also a degret of Joy and pride- that . arises in all of our hearts to know that i one q/ our group has attained to the t efficiency' of being promoted to the ( presidency of Benedict college. s ~-Dr. J.
