I have listened to many addresses delivered by him anil each was pronounced a masterpiece. His wonderful sermon before the Bi- ; _ HhopR* Council at - Birmingham. Ala- ; bama, prior to the General Conferl erice, was the talk of the connection. fAside from?being a real gem?o&thought and Spiritual inspiration,' it ^ : had in it the only solution to make greater and grander the A, M. Church in this country and Africa. Many of the needy reforms that came to our church as the result of the last General Conference grew out of, that sermon delivered by our good Bishop ?Ransom. I have been identified with every General Conference since 1910 and I know all of the bishops and am known to meat of them. And?bcliovc.. me, our state needs to congratulate herself in receiving .this gifted orator v and preacher as our bishop and great leader., ,\ye, ar&j,blessed with such a ?man. ?~? ? ? Must Doctor On Assessments I have supported every bishop thaT has ever presided over , me and have ?never- fought a single one. I mean 4 r? ofnn/1 \wr PioKnn PoncnvJI o nr? fnl. l-v ovanu ujr uiouup ivaiiouiu muu ivi low where he leads. But there is one thing" ram going to do, and that is. I am going to tell him personally of with a delegation, that these high assessments on our churches have al most paralyzed them in this state. And unless something is done to re ducc llieWl Wg just as well cloi.u u| : shop, and especially in the rural dis tricts. -Np one is getting converted in our churches and scarcely anybody " oi note connecting themselves with them. The people in many places in the country are leaving our churches givng as their-, reasons "the assess ywontg ary tnp high " Thy nffipprg aild "'"Tiiieiubers in some charges flatly?re^ I fuse to put forth any efforts to raise ' the assessments. The^ say that they are unreasonable, unmerciful and ungodly. Ninety per cent .of the cluirches here have no insurance on them whatever. Many of them are-rottening down for want of repairs and the ?people claim that they cannot do anyv ?.f nil fnr tbotr| Wansn of the heavy assessments. Some 6f~TTtrr-mi=.. nisters are- receiving, comparatively nothing for support and salary. Sow have gone to other denominations. We just as well prepare to arrange ouiv state's budget so as to cut these assesments on the charges -or?f-he?pe-u pie will cut themselves-away from us ' like they are doing. I have no doubt - but that we will raise quite a handsome sum for education here next week under Bishop Ransom, but i1 will be due largely to the sacrifice of pastors, coupled with their candy clubs and other projects that will accoust - --for. it. The rank and file.of the membership ('"haVe not concerned themselves the least bit about the assessments. And_these poorly paid pastors with the few faithfu 1 ones" of their congregations cannot continue to carry these heavy burdens without the full cooperation of the *btire menibership of the church. Now if 1 am not telling the \frhole truth as to the sentiment of These fiSSTC^snrcnts - m this state let the assessment payers and not the assessment makers rise "f ii ri rl hr-nnd mo nf t f>) H n tT a falsehood. On the other hgnd if the assessment makers think I am sounding ?a false ?alarm, let them travel the . state and see how well they can col'! lect their high assesments. To continue to heap up obligations on people who have no jobs and scarcely ~ food to eat is driving, the,m awa.\' i from us. Blame Our leaders '~FronT~five to thtfay dollars from*' ?ftCH minister of oiir poorly paid mi?nintry-in any_j?ne effort is a yoke that _ indeed .gauls. This~is~nbtI i/r b e' aftri buted to our late bishop.;but to our freely speaking leaders. I remember his first conference in Morris Brown church, Charleston, he said that "I am going to ask my presiding elders. lina to contribute fifteen dollars on I educational night and the,'"others pay I in proportion. When I go to Florida I I will ask the presiding elders and' pastors to pay thirty dollars. The mi-1 ni?try there is in better eircmnatanrl ces than yours here/' But as several :?of the Florida^ ministers- were in at- tendance at that conference, "our im-i pulsive Peters"' thundered "We will j pay thirty dollars too. We cpp pav | ' as much as Florida." This is how the! $30.00 came in for this state, which | has almost delivered some of the ministers to the sheriff and others to j __the rag man. It has bereft poor little children of their Christmas Santa | ?Glausy and"has cHuscd some wives to pearances.. Everybody is not rich, nor have all persons good paying positions: And to my mind this was more ?ef a penalty than a sacrifice It was; brought upon us by our -own loud] mouthed leaders, and not our good bi_ shop that has gone .to his reward. Now L if we are not disposed to '^doctor" on ] ? this "assessment" then those whose I checks have been returned should take ' care of them. And these tissue paper " notes should be redeemed. In so do|* ingr I would be reimbursed of what I C have out and cannot collect. If we L would simply: tell the bishops the true! i^atatus of things in steady or bragging and buidozlhg Wherr we are as poor as . r Job's old-gflndorr they would have [ > compassion upon iw awl ftot-fYact of,. i "t?
