r . PAGE TWO THE "OLD GRAY" A! E.PHIL TIME CUT FOR GOOD BUT :.. . . EXTENDED F6R EVIL It is an awful .thing to sec how little time the people are willing'to put in spiritual things and how much tim- they give to the things, of^Ahe * world. The few churches-in -the eit4es , J that attempt to have prayer meeting limit the time from thirty to sixty * minutes while the darices and. other amusements of the cities continue ? . from four hours to all night. Why ?: people?can Ret -tired?so quickly?inGod's service arid never ^et weary in the service.of sin is a wonder to me' : One of t.he inducements to get OTT" Masses to church set-vices TrT these days is to announce or publish that the service will not last over twentyfive or thirty minutes. And mnnv at-r tend church service only when they have no where else to tro. And just as soon as they get in,.they are ready to go out. They are restless through^ out the entire service.and feel reliev0 ed when the order Js given for the doxology to bp sphg. Some people a never Witness the opening and closing of a religious selvice the year round. They come in at the middle of the .^_servict. and go out. befoi'e -the end. Really many people are not contented in religious service long enough to rid .*- their minds of material things land place them on heavenly things. It takes tim?_to center one's affections upon things above, but the- Tiiasses have no such time to spare. These same people that almost become disgusted with the lateness of a church service, will go to a sinful- frolic, pay an extortiou^ admittance fee and sit there for hours. Some may argue that the reason is, because the church ? service is too tame or not-interesting Some may say -that it is- becayso the pulpit is in arrears of the pews. Bu* none of thegg'Ayiirt hold good? Tor the above endictments are true in - C?."cs where have cultured ministers* And So far as being entertained at the house of God, the Holy Spirit and the thought of heaven a he sufficient tc charm every individual "that comes solely to be benefitted. The answer is that the people in the world are incli'ned to drift from spiritual things ~to carnal?things.?Wr?need to put more time in the Master's service. If our heavenly blessings are given to us-in proportion to thP time, we put .1:..: in 111 Villi? M'lAKf, f IU?1 u w-Miva 1. ?* the bitter experiences we arc witnes inpr at this stag<r'of the world's ex* istence. Our tirhe spent with the Lord is too.short to derive spiritua1 and material blessings frcun J.hiw _ There will forever be a famine in this land until men are willing to put as much time in the service of our Lord and Masten as they now put in the service of the devil.. ; "We.Are Passing Away." * The death., of Rev. 0. A. Parker. was a shock to his many friends who had ftot heard of his 'illness, lie was one among the leading yOung minis... ters of his church and afi acknowled ged-gospel nreaeher. He had a beautiful flow of language and well chosen English that would appeal to an audience anywhere. ~ At .one ftlile he was our associate pastor, being at- Helena ? during -our--Terra -Mou-hnm- "He had completed a successful career at Manning Station, head'Qfif that district, and was recently appointed to Dillon Station,"which ,i$' the head of that district. Death claimed him ir less time than three months after th.c assignment, but during his short stay . ."inglv, the entire town. That within itself speaks lounder than words ir favor of the deceased. _^?he passing of Bro. J. D. Hamilton tvom our church in Spartanburg last week, was another deplorable incident. He was looked upon as almost the father of Trinity and stood by every pastor sent to that charge. He was indisi posed during our quarterly visit at his . church, hut Dr. -McClellan, pastor and the grand and loyal members of the. - church were dotng everything in their po&er to care for him. Every pajtof should pattern after Bro. McClellflp. in seeing after those members v/ho have worn themselves put in the service of God's church. By so doing it would strengthen the interest of church members in their respective churches. The Winnsbom district has sustained a great loss in the death of the late Bro. Hamilton and is great ly impoverished-.by the same. The - race ancP church received ,a painTuT stroke a few days ago, in. the passing from labor to .reward,, the late Josephus Gary, A.
