jA/j Saturday. Jannarv__9tl^- 4^7 5V THE "OLH 4*RA ?-~ANB~ THE NF.W RinFR< . i (By E. Philip Ellis.) At the close, of the Columbia Annual Conference, I found myself with t\- c _a a,i?..r.?~ wxii.r:. .':nr.i ;?Ul ll, ?U?UiO, tX HfWl)' it ( J JMJ1 II l presiding -.elder, by Bishop' John Hurst. It was the first opportunity of the kind 'that was ever given either of us; s0 both of us have decreed that our good bishop shall never have cause to regret his appointment. Both of us have begun our work and are -meeting the greatest success. Our ndpistera nnH thnir rnnfn?[_?n? inn elated with pur services. My first quarter was on the Allen circuit, with Rev. E. P. Butler, this is a fine "congregation, once pastored by us. We were proud beyond expression to meet this people, Rev. Butler is a fine man, si' number one preacher and has things well in hand on this charge. He need not be uneasy, for he will be cared for Our next appointment was Wedgefield with Rev. J. ,M. Harrison, our _____ predecessor. Here we ? wmrntzsr ful congregation. The pastor havihg just arrived had begun to line up things ki toyst clas^ style. He made it pleasant for us together with his good people and 4ve left paid up and greatly impressed with them. High Hill station wai~our next Btop ?-iwith Revr S. W; Fuidl|ain. This la g noble people and- Rev. Fordham is styled a young prince among t^cm. He is indeed a-scholar of no?mean repiiattion, a great?preacher?and christian-gentleman. He treated us " ' . royally. Bro. M. H. Robin'son is one of the stewards of that church and he J- i?1 1 - C. ? Tlx V.^,1 . la tllUCCU iX mils juuny; iwin, .nt; iic>u . ' ^recently lost his .mother and $he was so highly respectedi_uhtil?cme whole ' section of the church was o'ccupied by white 'people at her fuiierah ? From High Hill we went to Lan ?caster, the heatl of the district. ne're we met Rev. W. B. Bouler, with the situation well in hand. The people of Lancaster told us that Rev. Bouler is -- the only pastor and preacher in the city. He has his church well organi, zed from the pulpit to the door. We spoke t0 several of his groups in joint -kiXfr:?SftSlon while thorp, ami in-eompatrv with him, -we addressed the High School of which Prof. John R. Wil son, is principal. This school has 14 " - teachers ancK, nearly eight hundred students. They have an able principal and a fine corps of teachers. We ?had-an -excra?quarter-and Rev. "Bouler made things pleasant for us in every respect.. ' . ' i... We found ourself next with-Rev^ R, E. Anderson and the Legree circuit here we found- a most respectable congregation and a fine pastor. Both Sunday School and church were well ^organized by him and-going forward He took special care of'us, for which we shall 'ever remember him. From Legree, Wje went to Rev. J. A, Gamble atlS.t,. (Phillips. It is said that the late Bishop Ghappelle spoke of Rev. Gamble as one of the best pas tors in the church. He is a genius - He" had our assessment in hand when we arrived. He does not want that item to be mentioned in HuT conference. What about it? ?Every presiding elder that ever presided ovcf me, namely: Revs. J. E. Thomas, T, F. Harper and <3. K. Ly^es know that their assessments were -paid them at the close of each session of their con ference without theiin knowledge as t0 how it was ..raised. V Rev. Geo. C. Johnson, also one of the elders under whom I served. They will tell that -it wan a cuihnion?thing for imr:fq c jgive them esTra' tips after paying ?them. Any P. E. wbuld rush to get Rev. Gamble on his district. His kind ^re always in demand. Ho is making a new St. Phillips out of the old and the ^people are simply carried away 1 with his.leadership. Rev. J. A. Gamble is safe. Now you just watch and see. " " '.' ' -*?:?- ti. *' We wound up tin* old year with Rev, T. H. Withers on the Bishopville circuit, Sunday," December 19th, 192G. We began the new.year with Rev. W. R. Bowman, Mill Creek circuitr January 1-2, 1927. Both'of these are our young progressive pastors and we are ~ proud^ oT tKem. ^ We feel that we have a set of good * men- in?fchig---distTTCt^? those whose names, we nave not aireauy ineimuued are: Revg^C. B. Cook, J. P. Brown, _Mfc-pA- R- Baton, -and O. A. Moranfc BP The height of my ambition is to be a friend and brother^ all of my minis , ters. All I ask is their hearty eorop ' eration in helping to do the work of the church and I will stand by them to the very last. My reception wtih A the ministers and congregations is simply great ana 1 njive evm v reasun to be thankful to God for the treatment that I am receiving at their hands. 1 was made presiding iTdel I after serving 23 years as pastor in the A, M.
