"Tolerably good. I suppose she learns as much from books at home as anywhere, but she will never bo a lady or fit tor genteel society till sho goes somewhere. But her father wont hear a word about it, say he can't afibrd it, and that it wont bo anv kind of use to her, and all that. Strange howlittle a man knows about such things !'' Mrs. 0. who thus gave expression to her sentiments, was an old friend of mine whom I was visiting, and this conversation occurred tho evening of my arrival, after ber husband and childron were in bed, and we were having a little confidential chat. i Had not seen Uelin.Ann lor some live years, but remember her very well, a-> a pretty, lively, rather self-willed young l;i.!y of twelve, who was a givat favorite in tLe family, ami hade fair to prow tip ir:t?? a handsome attractive woman ; .and i;. was with no small interest I looked forward to mooting her. Sim sat down to t! table without so much as Raving "Good mornintr" to her parents or brothers, ami looked at everything before her \vi?h wry dissatisfied turn up of her pretty liltlo now, found fault with the cofif.e, which she sipped with a loud noise, and finally, after swallowing a few mouthfuls pushed away her chair without saying a word, and It:it tlie room loudly slamming the door after her. "A boarding school to teach yon manner?, young lady !" I mentally exclaimed, ''What you want is a good home training. on? which should have you taught lo rise eatly wash your face and comh your hair properly, and clean your teeth and naiN: to dispense with mailorders and finger-lings, and dress yourself in a family with a pleasant smile and a cheeful "good morning," to drink your coffee and hold your knife and fork properly, and put take of what w:.s set before you without any disparaging comments; this would have done infinitely more than boarding school ever can, to make you a lady." Alas ! what can boarding schools do when building on such a foundation ! What, but add a few superficial airs and graces, a , little smattering of French and music, a little more fondness for dress and outside show, which will innke the innate vulgarity all the more conspicuous. It is sad to see the false ideas of refinement and gentility which exists in many New England homes. To make a lad)/ of the daughter is often the great end and aim fnr tvliicli nrrnnfr ii-a n*wl yet tliey so train her as to inako her totally unrefined and vulgar in dies?, manners and feeling*. To be a ladv seems to be in their vocabulary an expensively, fashionably dressed female, who looks with contempt on tho useful home occupations, and dawdles round the house with a piece of soiled embroidery in lier hands; who plays a few tunes on tho piano or guitar, and who has been taught a few conventional phrases, and affects a certain stylo and air, which imply a vast superiority over those around her. A huly ! "(Inod heavens and ministers of grace defend us" from all such ! A Iiddy! Oh, it is downright desecration thus to apply a word so significant of all that is gentle and kind and modest?a wonl that first of all, in synonnmous with neatness and amiability and of thoughtfulness of those about it. If mothers, ambitious for their daughters' succes in life, would only understand that to make them refined and lady-like, they educflte thorn for it alone, instead of relying on the tinsel ornaments of a boarding school education : than underlying all external graces of manner,* t lure must be a foundation of modest, refined though's, and womanly feelings to make them such as shall pk-ase the higher classes of society. we might hope for hotter things. We know a young woman mav be modest, neat and refined in feeling, without having the grace of manner which would <4iarm a stranger, but one who is such, ami truly simple ami unafli-eted, will never disgust or repel the most fastidious, and toem from the truly cultivated portion of the community.
