It was midsummer when wo reached the
Highlands. Tliivc hours riding front
Stirling brought us to lliC borders of that
sylvan lake of which the Scottish bard has
given much illimitable descriptions. Having
spent an hour in its calm, sunny wa- !
tera, our party landed and proceeded to
Loch Lomond ; somo in carriages, while
others preferred lo walk through the country
which was once the abode of those
- proud mountaineers, the Maegregors. A- j
long the pastoral slopes and mountainous j
ridges of He venue 1 described the wild j
goats cropping the fresh herbage, while j
hero ami Micro, along the base of the ravine,
half hi<l by ihe foliage of the oak and
the birch, stood the hamlets of the Highland
shepherds. From the lips of those
simple herd.-men the stranger may gather
if be choose?, many incidents of local and
traditionary interests, and which serve, also,
to throw light on the ethnographical history
of the people. The following narrative
shows the truth of the remark applied by
a German author to the Scotchman : "lie
is as grave as a Spaniard, as sly as a fox,
and as slippery as an eel."
Several-years ago a bravo, hardy Highlander,
whom we will call Duncan, loll
Uts home among the glens and hills of
Arglyeshirc with a large liord of cattle, destined
for the summer fields and more fertile
meadows of Yorkshire.
"With his uniform success, he soon disposed
of his slock to the English graziers, i
and with a well tilled purse, we started on

dog had expired without a groan, and his
trusty steel was .now in an assassin's hand.
It was all the work of a moment. Seeing no
possible alternative, he very reluctantly gave
up his gold, and was sutl'ored to arise, the
C highwayman still holding hiin fast. "Who'll
believe," said the crest fallen Scothman, '-that
such a man as I, with such a dog, and with
that good blade, could have been robbed by

"Don't give yourself any uneasiness on that
score, old fellow," retorted the other ; "for
you arc not the first onfc of your countrymen

by. At the same time he drew his sword,
And leading him to the stump of a decoyed
old oak near by, bade him lay his hand thereon.

Now the idea of losing this useful and important
member, and especially,by such an
x unnecessary and unscientific amputation,

Jggested itself to his mind. Without saying

very meekly placed hivhand on the slump,
