His ancestois were amongst the first settlers in that part of (he country,and his father bore a commission in the revolutionary army, and was present at the battles of Bunker Ilill, Saratoga, Princeton, TFfcnton, Monmouth atid Germantown. Ho was afterwards a Major in Wayne's army, and died near Zimcsville, Ohio, in 1830. fyis son, Lewis Cass, was educated at the academy of Exeter, and studied law at Marietta, Ohio, under the lato Governor Meigs. He was admitted to the bar in 180'J, and iu 1800, more than fifty years as*o. was elected a member of the Ohio Legislature. The Northwestern campaign being happily terminated, (jeii. During the time that be was governor of the Territory of Michigan, he negotiated no less than twenty-one treaties with the Indians. In the expeditions necessitated by them be encountered more peril and bad occasion for the display of more firmness and intrepidity than any man ever engaged in this service. In 1831, Gen. Cass was called to the administration of the War Departmentby Gen. Jackson. In 1835 or 1836, in con-, sequence of ill-health, he' retired from this position, much to the regret of Gen. In 1845, after liis return from France, he was elected to the United States Senate from Michigan, and in 1848 nominated for the presidency, but defeated. He was one .of the-'leading friends of the compromise of 1850^ and subsequently ably supported the Kansas-Nebraska measure. On the 4th inst. his term expired in the United States Senate; and ho was succeeded by a republican. Secretary of the Treasury?Hon. Howell Cobb, of Georr/ia.?The Secretary of the Treasury was born at Cherry-Hill, Georgia*,'in 1815. Ho is the son of Col John A. Cobb, who, when .quite a hoy, removed from Greenville, North Carolina, with his father. Ilis mother, Sarah R. Cobb, was the daughter of the late'Thomas Roots, of Fredericksburg, Virginia. In the year 1834, wuen only nineteen, Mr. Cobb graduated at ; Franklin College, Georgia, and in tho following year be married Mary Anu, daughter of the late Col. Zachariah Lamar, of Milledgeville, Georgia, by whom he has had six sons, thiee of whom are dead, the two youngest dying at Washington city''during the first session of the thirtieth Congress.
