Carbery) C t Few needs of Union County exceed > those for decent roads, a subject v which should interest every resident, a whether from personal motives or community interest, whether owner d of land or tenant. Union County has d the misfortune to have many public a highways called by courtesy roads e which are only such in name during the dry, warm months of the year. <" Union County likewise has well dis- o tributed from border to border and in- t exhaustible quantity of good road t building materials waiting to be used. <1 We have the stone, gravel; in fact, 1 anything required in the construction s of the very best roads. Why have f bad ones ? d The man who willingly goes out and t votes against good roads might as s well vote against having schools in r his district, or a church, or any other c civilizing influences. He is voting c against his very best interests, mount- 1 ing himself on a pedastal as a stum- t bling block in the way of progressive- i ness. He is like unto the dog with a s block to him; the block must travel s as fast as the dog, but moans noth- t ing more than a handicap. 1 Our best community and other in- s terest of greatest value are largely v dependent on good roads, roads that ^ can be used when the wathr is bad 1 with rasonable comfort.
