Letter From France 1st School Corps, Dec. 18, 1917, France Dear Parents:? Christmas is coming and almost here and I have nothing that I can send you, except my love and good wishes for a happy Christmas, bast Christmas I spent on the desert plains of Mexico and it was a most disagreeable day?the worst we had while there, but this day I don't think will be so bad, although it is cold here. We hope for a summer day and it is coming by and bay. Does James B. Henderson ever write home? If he does, does he ever say how he likes the army? I do not suppose he found it what he thought it would be and it was too bad he was disappointed on his first -.1 A i. 1 i. !a 9 _ t .44 1.1 A L enlistment, Dut it is uetter tnat ne went in now and not wait to be drafted. I'm there with two thin blankets, As thin as a slice of ham. A German spy was likely the guy Who made 'em for Uncle Sam. How did I sleep? Don't kid me! My bedtick is filled with straw, And lumps, and humps, and big fat bumps That punched me 'til I'm all raw . Me, and my two thin blankets, As thin as the last thin dime? As thin, I guess, as a chorus girl's dress? Well, I had one h-11 of a time! I'd pull 'em up from the bottom? v>irrM id'a TY1V R V. D'O V *'* J "T>"V? An' I've chilblains, cough and the croup?) Me, and my two thin blankets, Bundled up under my chin? Yes, a German spy was likely the guy, And, Gosh, but he made 'em thin! Letters From the Boys Mrs. F. M. Farr, president of the U. D. C. auxiliary to the Red Cross chapter has received the most appreciative letters from the boys who were given the sweaters from this chapter. They cannot .express in words their thanks for the kindness and thoughtfulness of the "folks back home" and seem to appreciate the thought which prompted the deed as much as the Rood warm sweaters, it is the purpose of the chapter to provide every boy from Union county with a sweater and the pood work is going on and the ladies are busy knitting, knitting all the time. One energetic, bright little woman who knits all the time said: "it is not our fault if we do not win the war, so I knit morning, noon and night and dream ol purling, purling unto the end."
