WHAT ARE YOU WORTH TO YOUR COMMUNITY? (Contributed by Jas. L. Carbery.) Every person, young or old, black or white forms a unit of his or her community, a vital part, capable of great good or harm in proportion to the individual interest manifested which includes personal influence. The man or woman who does not at least possess the spirit of community love is disloyal not only to the community itself but the county and State of which it forms a part, in short the United States. Such people are parasites willing to be fed from a hand unsupported by personal effort: they additionally are directly contributing to forces which help the Kaiser. We may go out and talk loyaltv to our country, but it takes action for results and the individual and community must pive full lieapinp measure if they are to ye contributiner factors in a victorious endinrr of the war. This cannot be over emphasized. Mnnv are prone to sneak disparapinply of their community and surro',r,"nrrs. they feel some other place is a better place to live when in fact the community is just what they have helped to make it and possessses undeveloped charms equal to any other if the people themselves had the ripht snirit and would pull together. Pulling topether does not mean alonp any particular line, for this result in a one-sided development resultinp in a paralyzed community. We need pood wholesome cooneration and broad visions alonp the mental, morol. nhvsical and sniritual lines. No human beinp can be absolutely Tllaf trv Viim s\r? if m of nvioll \r lacking in any one of the.se, even thono-h they surpass in one or two others. One common trouble with every organization including churches is that Ithere are a comparatively few devout workers, willinpr to make all manner of sacrifices for community pood while the majority sit at a distance with hands folded, knock. This above all is no time for knockiner. The spirit of Telieion, economics and every other contributor to the frood of mankind is acrainst narrowness. We frnust broaden out, bury our little petty jealousies and seek to render a service that will mean something to the world at larpre, to humanity, in the hour of intense need. If every community will do its "bit" in recognition of the fact that it is an indispensable unit of our prreat country we shall not only shorten the period of war but become a marked community, marked because of progress iveness and tnrnt tnat is mseparaoie; the opportunity is right at our threshhold awaiting acceptance. There is little time for theorizing and day dreaming; we need practical and possible things in our every day lives put immediately into action for the common good. Just as the child is taught to read and write, so we must prepare to educate ourselves for this new era by a close study of Conditions and thinking ahead, preparing for what is to come. We must set pace with the times, be prepared for the reception of new ideas and methods that will necessarily form 9 part <jf th? advancement at the individual and community. We must practice saving, service and sacHflte and unhesitatingly contribute to those TOO RADICAL; WA Wo believe Dr. (Jarfield has made a all industrial plants shut down for f ten weeks thereafter for Monday of < that unless some freedom of action be country ,it will soon be throttled to billions of dollars to meet war needs i< dustries of the country are to be shut < tiiseation. The rising generation will be largely affected by the things we do now, their way may be made easier and burdens lightened by better qualifications. I | We need a number of things in the great preparedness move or thrift campaign, among them, goo 1 schools, good roads, better churches, farm management and allied interests, above all we need the progressive spirit and a willingness to go ahead and release ourselves from the things that have been holding us back. ! If the citizens of Union county can catch a vision of the purpose for which such a drive is desirable, if t they feel there is room for improvement ,if they want to progress and measure up favorably with other progressive communities, certainly they cannot afford to lag behind. They should feel it a duty to be contributj in-r factors, moving spirits in the for| ward movement which is to help the individual and county, a movement which stands for the introduction of best principles of true American thrift and patriotism embracing the largest seope. Such is the Union Chamber of Commerce and Aprricul| ture. It does not propose to discriminate in the administration of its service. It does not propose to start a ! lot of things and finish nothing. This ! organization stands for service to all and in order to accomplish its desires j.must be not only supported by the people of the city but those of the various communities throughout the county, not only with memberships, for the financial support alone would ' mean failure, but with the best moral | support and cooperation. If you are ' interested in the place you live and the people you should be interested 'in and a member of the Union Chamber of Commerce and aid them with vour ideas as to how they can help ryou make your community a better place to live, a more successful business, a healtheir community that will invite and attract other people worth I while. 7 TVin nnrt imn nlnv in hrinfvincr nVirmf isuch conditions will be a vital factor in the development of the whole plan.
