CAUTION! C. ON ALI American Medical Dangerous Dru Ridi Law Requires All ' Uea<l carefully all patent medicine I labels to see if they contain .alcohol. The law requires that all medicines containing alcohol must be so labelled for the protection of the public, thus classing alcohol as other dangerous, harmful and habit-forming drugs. The American Medical Association composed of the foremost men in the medical profession, came out with the statement in their recent meeting that alcoho is of no value in medicine, either as a drug or a stimulant. A recent investigation conducted in the Bellevue Hospital, New York, disclosed the fact that of 259 alcoholic patients examined (>8 per cent., more than half, began to drink before 21 years of age. As a result physicians all over the country refuse to prescribe alcohol under any condition. As has been shown many acquire the alcohol habit before attaining maENTIRK TEN MILLION DRAFTED MEN DRAWN First Call Made l*p From the One Million Three Hundred Thousand Drawn?List of Numbers Fnion County Not in First Call. Washington, duly 20.?An epochal thing took placi here in Washington today?a thing unprecedented in history. It was America's draft day. It saw her fling her answer to the scornful charge of autocracy that she is a nation of dollar-makers, but not warmakers. Ten million citizens gave her answer. Every man in the nation between the ages of 21 and 31 was listed in order for war service. , It was a day that saw history made and the way prepared for the making of more history. Chronicle and tradition record no time of practically an entire nation going under arms. A long, high-ceilinged room, 220 senate ofliflice building, saw the event which looms as the outstanding feature of the world war. A little group of men, khaki-colored and in mufti,' soldiers and civilians, were the characters on the stage. From 9:30 in the morning unfil a new day was breaking the wheel chance unwound the fate of men. i en mousanu nve Hundred capsules, each containing: a number, determined when each of the 10,000,000 men wou! 1 serve. There are many ways in which : this habit had been acquired, but per- 1 hapsliaps the commonest form has 1 been through the medium of a patent j medicine containing a great percent- 1 age of this deadly poison. Beef, wine, < and iron, for instance, is usually given 1 to those convalescing from a severe 1 illness. This is a favnvitp nronara. tion given to children and has prob- < ably done more to develop the alcohol 1 habit than the average person imag- < ities. 1 Iron, of course, is the greatest blood < purifier and strengthener known; on i the other hand, alcohol is perhaps the | deadliest poison to the tissue of the 1 human system. It counteracts the efficiency of the iron and makes the < condition worse. A sick person would ] be far better off if Riven just plain beef. The reason for the fallacy that i beef, wine, and iron, is efficient is that the alcohol it contains imparts a it held the fate of almost 5,000 men. Prospects were that the draft would not be concluded before 3 :30 a. m. Weary and with dull eyes, but determined, the little Rroup of men in i charge of the vast drawing stuck to their posts through the long hours of i the night. Just after 10:30 they were entering , upon the eight thousandth group of numbers. They had 2,500 yet to draw. Major Hugh Johnson, executive officer to Provost Marshal General Enoch Crowder, the man in charge, estimated that the work would not be completed before 3:30. i Up to 10:30 p. m. there had n%. been an error of any kind. Every one /of the four tall sheets on which the numbers were recorded as drawn agreed, and already printed proofs of the earlier tally sheets have been re-1 ceived from the government printing office. The entire first quota of 1,.'174.000 1 men had heen drawn before nightfall. 1 The others merely went on the lists in ease of their liability to service. Long Waif. Men holding the numbers now being ( drawn may not be ordered up for 1 more than 18 months, if at all. Thought is never helpful unless 1 there is coupled with it some form of < vigorous action.
