NEW HOPE New Hope, June 19.?It looks as if we are going to have rain this morn- < inj;. The growing vegetables need a ] good rain very much. The farmers are now through cutting their grain crops, with some a very good harvest and others not so good. I I The writer was the guest of Miss j Dora l.ipford of Jonesville Sunday < and attended services at the Moth- , ndist church, where Mr. Swagertv i.-. ; conducting a protracted meeting. Rev. 1? Mr. Ilolcomh has been delayed in get-|( ling to Jonesville but was expected to j} lie there vestcrdav on noon train to } take charge of meeting. Mr. Swagerty lias been holding a jrood meeting with large attendance most all the time. 'J'ho attendance is expected to he larger this week as Mr. llolconib has come, (luess people from the county will try to attend , as much a< possible. We hope there1, will he lots of good derived from this j | meeting. : i There is much work now heinfr done ,i for the lied Cross funds. Mr. .7. W. |, Scott collected money throughout!, our community and our editor, Mr.!, Uice, is doing a good part in this', work. We hope everybody will give! liberally to this cause. j, We all like to say something of . our fine road from Union to take ah pleasure ride over these roads now is I j a treat and we are glad for our coun- j \ ty to improve in any way. There can't j he any prettier road anywhere now. j The new cut adds more beautiful seen- | erv, and we consider it a beautiful t highway from Union to Jonesville. They are now preparing to built the j bridge over Rocky creek and are going f to put lots of work on the bridge as it will be one that will stand for a ] long time. We certainly can't boost , on our through roads for a car ride is j not such a pleasant ride comparing ] with the other road. Must say we < will ni* g i <i(i wren mey (.uu ue worked as it is very much needed. They are really rougher than the> have been in some time. The rough winter and hard rains have put them in a bad condition. Hope they will be attended to, as we all believe in "good 1 roads." Several from this community attended services at .Jonesville Sunday. Mr. W. F. Bishop and Mr. Dewitt Whitlock motored to Spartanburg Sunday to see Mr. Elzie Guyton, who! is in a hospital there. Mr. Guyton had the misfortune of an accident which occurred in Spartanburg a few j days ago while on duty as a street; car conductor. He was stepping off the car and was struck by an automobile truck and was hurt very much, but not seriously and seemed to be improving fine. We all hope for a speedy recovery. He formerly lived i in our community. j Miss Martha Lee Fowler spent the week-end with relatives in Jonesville. Mrs. J. L. Whitlock of Bonham community visited at the home of Mrs. J. G. Bishop Sunday. Vero. THE SHADOW. Mr. Editor: I desire to acknowledge my appreciation for your very interesting and instructive paper, cs- : peeially the supplements. The late supplement with reterence | < to the closing exercises of the Union i high school seems or appears like a t silver lining to the dark cloud of war t in the distance. These school exer-jt cises remind me of my own school : 1 days in one particular?that of war. j 1 My school days were during the six- j ties while the dark war cloud or shadow was over all our nation and | afterwards while the towns were c garisoned by United States soldiers, t What seemed the greatest unpleasant- j liess among the people was the dislike \ that most Southern people had for the j I Northern people of our nation. I am j e very glad that seems to have almost c disappeared. I never had any dislike f for the Northern people or the North- I s crn soldiers. Perhaps one reason | 1 I....... 1 Vio.1 r\ r*?;ic:on for i midlife iiuvu i ??* ..w . ? | any dislike as my father was past i * the aire to go to the army and my five brothers were all too young to iro to the army. . The present shadow of war that ha.> ; been in the distance for some time '. seems more dark and dreadful as we come in contact with it, or as its influence seems to invade our nation. While we do not favor German imperialism we should not have any dislike or unpleasant feelinir for the many honest, truthful, intelligent German people amonir us. They cannot help what the rulers and officers of their nation are doing and they f#iould have no claim on any unkindness shown them. The dreadful war will not be decided by human power. It will be decided by the great overruling power of destiny. E. A. G. PARTNERSHIP DISSOLUTION. Notice is hereby given that the partnership composed of I.. Richter and S.
