The common sense of the farmer is his best asset. No amount of outside help, no heaping up of pity can avail him much. He will have to be the architect of his own fortune. There is not a farmer in the county that does not know more than he puts into practice. Fact is, most of them would do vastly better than they do if they had the necessary capital. The lack oi money is one of his chief lacks, and he knows this as well as any one else knows it. The present hijrh price of all farm products helps the farmer who was in easy circumstances, but pinches the unprepared man. It is a fact that with everything: in the way of food for man and supplies for stock produced in abundance the price would be low on these articles. Cabbage at 10 cents a pound looks attractive to the producer. But two cents a pond is the normal price, and it is the price that will prevail wtih the coming: of normal production and normal times. Hog raising looks attractive with bacon selling around 20 cents a pound. But this price will not prevail with the coming of normal times. This year, particularly, the farmer knows he must raise feed stuffs. He must make tremendous effort to raise everything possible for the feeding of man and beast. He cannot go wrong here. Then, he knows that he must raise all the cotton he can. SHOULD BE CENSORED. The moving' picture show is a thing of modern, very modern times. It has come to stay, for it has in it vast potentialities. I.ike all great creations that have come to our modern civilization it has its dangers. It is, within itself, neither good nor bad, but has the capacity to serve on the side of; either force. If the business can be kept clean it is a wonderful source of worthy amusement and a large factor in the distribution of knowledge. If it is to pander to the base and brutal. and to make sin attractive, it is capable of untold harm. The indelible impression left upon the mind, particularly the child's mind, is beyond all i i _ a : ti - ? ** raicuiuuun. i nese impressions snouid he wholesome, cloan, moral. There is altogether too great leniency on the part of the public as to what should be shown. There must be a radical change in this respect or the thinking public will realize that the picture show is a thing to be condemned in no uncertain words. There should be a strict censorship of the moving picture show. And each community should protect itself, not trusting to some unknown and perhaps fictitious censorship. Any film corporation can have at the beginning and the end of the picture: "Passed by the Blank Board of Censors." That is not worth the space it takes up on the film. Each community should demand clean pictures and should have a board of censors of its own. The brutal, cold-blooded murders pictured so often, can but lead to ; harvest of murder, for the impression made upon the child's mind is indelible. The lascivious, immoral reproductions of vuljrar scenes, the too often repeated scenes in which one man is too attentive to another man's wife, should be put under the ban. The cold-blooded sex pictures should be put under the ban. The fact is that it is of frequent occurrence that younj* men and younpr women sit through the reproduction of scenes that are not only repulsive, but are actually horrifying. If the moving picture is to be saved to its possible good use it must be put upon a higher plane. Mr. C. C. iJaneaster of West Springs was a visitor to Union Thursday. BUFFALO Buffalo, March 21.?The officers and teachers of the Methodist Sunday school attended a teachers' meeting on Tuesday night last by special invitation of the Monarch Methodist Sunday school. After listening to some very able and instructive talks along Sunday school lines by various Sunday school representatives, a sumptuous repast was heartily enoyed, and to say the evening was pleasantly spent, too mildly expresses it. These meeting, which have been recently started, has already proven to be very helpful to Sunday school workers aside from the social feature connected. In meeti n tr nnrl ovpli unrrinrr t/looo n vwl Wno?.?Mr# suggestions from different Sunday school officials, it creates a greater interest and a resolve to do more for the advancement and improvement of Sunday school work. We wish to thank that noble band of Sunday school workers for the great hospitality accorded us. and especially do we wish to thank Rev. .Tas. H. Brown, pastor of the Methodist church at Monarch, and his good wife who left othing undone to make our stay pleasant and enoyable. We would suggest that a similar occasion with more of the Sunday schools of the county would not he out of order. A quiet wedding, the announcement of which comes as a surprise to many friends, was that of Miss Nellie Scarboro to Mr. D. O'Shields, both of this place; was solemnized Saturday evening at the Methodist parsonage. the Rev. B. H. Harvey being the officiating clergyman. The bride is the youngest daughter of our esteemed townsman, Mr. B. F. Scarboro, and a i sister of Mrs. C. A. Miller of Union. ! She is a lady of unusual charm and attractiveness and her friends are numbered by the score. The groom is a popular and accommodating clerk in lie company store. Their many friends wish for them a pleasant matrimonj ial voyage. For the present they are boarding with her brother, Mr. R. I). Scarboro. on St. Elmo street. Mrs. J. I,. Padgett spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Hilton, at Columbia. Mr. H. T. Hicoine and Mice Annin L. Green spent Sunday last at Newberry. They made the trip in Mr. Biggins' new car and reported a most delightful trip. With the exception of a few cases of measels in town the general health of the place is splendid. The Ladies' Embroidery club met with Mrs. W. C. Poole on Tuesday evening at her hospitable home in East Buffalo, where a most delightful evening was spent. After engaging in doing fancy work and socially chatting at some length, very tempting and delicious refreshments were served, which all did ample justice to the occasion. These social gatherings continue to grow in favor, and are invariably looked forward to with no little degree of pleasure. The Baptists have recently installed a bell in the Baptist church, which will prove quite a convenience. Dr. Chas. H. .Tones spent Sunday last in Spartanburg. Mr. W. A. Johnson spent last Sunday with his daughter, Mrs. C. A. Greer, at Ottaray. Dr. F. E. Fowler and Mr. Jas. Bates of Monarch spent a few hours in town Sunday evening. The members of the Methodist church are planning the building of a new fence around the parsonage, which will add much to the beauty and attraction of that section of the town.
