We have had several days of rain, and Sunday there was an all-day rain. This morning is fair and cold. This writer has been home for several days, hasn't been out to pet the news, so my letter will be short this time. The war news is about all the talk, and there seems to be a preat deal of excitement. Sometimes when we read the news from the papers we think that we are nearly arms lenpth from the fipht, as we listen at the other fellow makinp some remarks about what he thinks about it. We read an account of the 12 senators votinp apainst or filibusterinp me Din to give the President the power to arm the American merchant vessels, and we feel like if they had been at home it would have been better for the United States. Well, hasn't this been a war of speculation? How much more are we going to hear or going to see, God only knotvs. Mr. J. S. Thrasher has just returned from Greenville, where he spent three weeks with his daughter. He reports a pleasant visit meeting several of his old friends from Georgia that he hadn't seen in a good while. The Jonesville Township Sunday School convention will he held at Gilcad church March 25th, wnieh is the fourth Sunday. Everybody is invited to come ond bring well-filled baskets, as there will he all-day services. Mr. a .J. W. Scott, the township chairman. ^ says he wants some extra baskets of c {rood thinprs to eat for the bachelors arid widowers, and this writer seconds j the motion. A proprram of the con- j vention will be published next week. ^ Mr. .T. Louis TIames of I.ockhart passed by the junction last week on j his way to Washington and Baltimore. We hope he will have a successful ? trip. The health of the community is very prood. Mr. W. fJ. Gault seems to be the only one on the sick list at this r time. I KELTON Kelton, March 5.?Another week has passed and no work done on the farm, t A few more weeks of wet weather and o the farmers will be badly behind in 1 their preparation of land. S I hoped that after my last com- v munication I would not deem it neces- o sary to say anything more for the o present aboul great European war, but how can one help from talking about 1; that which should have their most seri- f ous attention. Some time last year I a had something to say in The Times b ubout Japan, Spain and Mexico. If b our country got involved in the great- i est of wars now waging and it now p looks very much that way. I was cer- p tain the feelings that Japan had to- 1 ward the United States on account of j the California alien law, which was c very radical, but probably just and s Cuba, which had been taken by the t United States from Spain and I am ( not well enough posted on the history t of our own country to say how much d of the western territory taken or t bought from Mexico by the United States. But in either case it was un- d just to force an individual or a nation I ;o sell that which justly belongs to l,hem, although they get full value for v t. There is too much of that busiless done to individuals in this coun- ii iry now. You will see a corporation s auy a water power, build a dam, run l power line through a man's planta- v ;ion against his will, if he does not I ;ell them a right of way and their lam flood and ruin valuable lands that h he private parties do not want to disjose of at any price and the plea of fi ;he corporation is that it is for the c benefit of the public. Now, if it were lot possible to run cotton mills, light v ip towns and cities, etc., by any other s lower, it would be right to force men ;o sell right of ways, but we all know h :here is. Take the railroads: they F lave to have right of ways or they C ould not be built and we are com- e lelled to have them stop the railroads o 10 days and what would be the result? f these Western States justly beonged to the United States how came dexico or other nations possessing hem? If they did righteously belong o the United States we ought to have lad them. Otherwise they belong to he original owners and one day this :ountry will pay for her wrong doing, ^ is I understand the teaching of the ^ ;reat moral law means the same to a lations as to individuals, but greed y ind selfishness rules the world today u ind it is no use for little kittles to C :all the big pots black for human naure has always been the same but here is something better than nature ^ ind that is love and righteousness. v If our nation gets in the war prac- f ically all the world will especially 11 he western hemisphere, so let all 11 jrepare for it for it is a day of jreat preparation*-" riendly to the United States and we 1 iced not lay all the blame to Ger- nany, for she is not sleeping. I have | ead England's statement blaming jermany with the cause of the war, md I have read what Germany said, darning England with it and it seemed ike to me that both sides made it rery plain who was to blame, but I im like Uncle Si Foster was when le was converted as he used to tell ne. He was converted going to his vork in a little path and naturally vanted to unite with some Christian hurch, so he went to a certain church ind the preacher made it very plain hat his church was right. In a short ime he heard another of another delomination and the preacher made it 'qually as plain that his church was ight, so he said he never was so glad hat he could read the Bible and be lis own judge who was right. So I am eading the reports that have gone >ut through the press and will be my iwn judge. But oh, the lies that are >eing sent out by both sides we can lever know the real facts. I see the >ig dailies are criticising those congressmen who voted against arming nerchant vessels. Sometimes a milority is right. Look back to 18'?0 ind see the ones who voted against se:ession, how they were criticized, but hey were right. But I heard speeches ind read other speeches about serodng from the Union and from what hey said a State or States had a ight to withdraw from the Union, lut I pay that no State or nation has i right to make slaves of people, it nakes no difference what the color of he skin is and treat them as m,mv iwners did, heating them, half feeding I md clothing them, working ihcrn very J lard, and the worst of all, they were lot allowed a God-given privilege of in education. Rut I know many of hem who had good masters are worse ?flf now then then. I nominate Mr. Dan Inman for ^inckney township commissioner. He s a worthy man and competent to fill he office. G. T. G.
