JONESVILLE Jonesville, Feb. 20.?Last Saturday there were two foreigners in Jones- b ville, a German and a Frenchman. fi They were looking after cotton lint- it ers their respective governments had d< in Jonesville. They make jrun powder out of the linters. Mr. E. F. McWhir- hi ter talked with both of these foreign- fi ers, not, however, at the same time. They could talk English and Mr. Me- r' Whirter jrot some information from them, mostly from the Frenchman, C about times over in the war zone. a The Frenchman said he had served s' two and one-half years in the French h army. He thought the Germans were ? netting weaker and as for proof of n this fact the Germans had been throwing about 50 shells to one for tin ? French but now the French were throwing many more shells than the P Germans. Mr. McNVhirter said these h man never spoke to each other. Sunday evening it cleared off pret- t ty and clear as though it meant a ^ week following of the same sort but long before day Sunday night the rain ^ came pattering down and it continued Monday all the day long. v Miss Bessie Denton, a sister of Mr. 0 W. B. Blackwood, died in a hospital at Asheville last Friday and the remains were brought to Jonesville Sat- 11 urday and buried at Mesopotamia Sunday. a Mr. Willis Black of Jonesville and ^ M iss Minnie Woodruff of Spartanburg f were married last week. 11 i xi r t: 1 ' ^ .uis. o. **. l.ipscomn ana ;>irs. nan Whitlock have both been to the North- ' ern markets and bought their spring millinery. j1 You boys who are courting and ex- 11 pecting to get your girl given to you without any trouble, listen: Once a " young couple were courting and the F young man finally asked the father for his daughter, expecting a walkover, but the old gentleman handed him a string and told him if he would show him three ends to it he could have her, otherwise he could not, thinking he would block the game on j the young man. The young fellow took the string and asked for a few moments time and then held up one end of it and says, "This is one end, is it not?" "Yes," was the reply. He ; then held up the other end and said, a "This is another end, is it not?" and c the answer came, "Yes." He then c -J--:? " uiiciv uic mmiik iniu me nre and it g was burned up and he said, "That is j another end to it," and the old pen- c tleman assented and caved in and t the younp man pot his pirl. j Another incident that mipht interest ( younp courtinp folks: There was a ^ man who died in a home once, and r his corpse was laid upon a bed in a e upper room for the nipht and covered over with a sheet. About nipht an t Irishman came to the home and want- j ed to spend the nipht, which was ( pranted, and he was sent up to the e second floor to sleep. There were two s rooms above and he was piven direc- ^ tions to his room and no one went r with him and he pot the thinp mixed I and went to bed with the corpse, think- t ing it was another lodger. He took v his place very quietly on one side of c the bed. After awhile a young man | and a young lady went up to sit up t with the corpse, as the custom was. r They had a very dim light. The young j couple sat down at the fireplace and were soon in a lively courtship. The Irishman had not gone to sleep and he 1' quietly turned his eyes on the vigil 1 keepers, who got to hugging and kissing. which was more than Pat could | ^ stand and keep quiet, so he reached over and shook his bed fellow to wake him and show him what was going on and he found he was stiff in death and he sprang from the bed and made for the top of the steps. ;1 The yoUng couple thought the dead d man had come to life and thev made v for the top of the steps and all made fj lor the bottom in a mess. Shelton was a business vistor in Columbia this week. Mr. John Feaster and Eugene Rou!oire were in Union this past week n business. Messrs. Charles and Jim Diekerson ^ere in Chester this past week on business. The Wade Merchandise Co. of Leeds re closing: out their stock of proods. Ir. Wade is one of the R. F. D. cariers and will devote his time to farmng instead of merchandising. Mr. H. C. Coleman is improving: rom his operation. The friends of Charles Faucett were jlad to see him out again.
