JON ESVILLE i Jonesville, Jan. 15.?We are in the . Itrip of the cold wave today, which the weather man promised us yester ay. it doesn't seem to me that our bite winters are as severe as they were in the long ago. I am sure we used to have much more snow than we do of late years. I have heard it said by old men that when our county was cleared of its timber that the winters would be more severe and the summers would be dry and that we would suffer more for rain, but that theory doesn't prove true. Iiast summer proved to the contrary. The Bible says "Whether there be prophesies they shall fail." So it is very evident that our modern prophets are failures. Men often ask each other what they think the weather is going to do and the same thing as to the price of cotton, which is all idle talk, for no one knows when it will rain or what the price of cotton is going to be, and I will add, what the verdict of a petit jury will be. Something that should have an peared in my communication to The Times last week?the marriage of ] M iss Madge McWhirter, daughter of \ Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McWhirter, of ^ our town, a few days since. Miss j McWhirter visited relatives in Bir- t mingham last summer and spent three r four week out there and it was ? then that she first met Mr. Bennett, t and during the time Cupid got in his 5 perfect work and a correspondence ] followed until a few days ago Mr. ] Bennett came to Jonesville as a very j innocent stranger and he spent a few hood of this county until about grown. ] of his intended bride and left for his i home on Monday morning. The same v morning Miss McWhirter took the train for Inman, where she taught 1 school last year, and was to teach | again this year, but when the couple ; reached Spartanburg a marriage li- T cense was procured and a marriage ] followed and the groom and bride boarded the train for Mr. Bennett's home in Birmingham. Mrs. Bennett is one of Jonesville most loveable young women and has many friend:7 ' here who wish her and her groom at* long happy life and much success. 1 This was no unique proceeding, for * I am going to tell of another just 1 like it. Mr. T.oiii? CmwfnrH wio Kn?n and lived in the Mt. Tabor neighbor- > days in the town, called at the home 1 He went out West and stopped at Bailey, Texas. While in this county J he attended school and Miss Bell 1 Moorehead, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. 1 W. A. Moorehead, attended the school 1 school. A few years ago Miss Moore- < head visited relatives in Texas, who lived near Mr. Crawford, and they met i and it seems that the words of the Auld Lang Syne occurred to them? 1 "Should auld acquaintance be forgot" i ?and Cupid came on the scene with his rabbit foot and got in his perfect > wark, and after Miss Moorehead re- ^ turned home a correspondence fol- ' lawed until a few weeks ago Mr. 1 Crawford came back to look upon his < native heath as he portended, but he < had something else in his heart, and * when he started for his Texas home ? he and Miss Moorehead met by arrangement without notice to the old t folks and left on the next train. Both > these couples did well and their many friends wish them success and long ' life in their Texas homes. Mr. Ashemore Vanderford, of near i Adamsburp, was in Jonesville Friday on business and, by the way, Mr. Van- ' derford's daughter and a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Adams were married , a few days apo without giving any ' notice to the old folks at home on either side and they, too, have both done well and have the well wishes of j their many friends. Two communications in The Union Times last week were very interesting: to me. One of them about old Simstown and the other about old Reids- { town. Much of the write-up of old t Reidstown is familiar to me and some ^ of the incidents of old Simstown is also fa.niliar to my mnd. It certainly ( took much time and work to dig: out { all this old history. I love the wo- { n...J ...... l?l.l.. -i.. .1 1 men aim Iiavc v^i%y liiVfI) IHTIillA'U Illy- . self in favor of female sufTrage, hut i I think a few women at least arc , making a mess of it by placing thorn- j selves at the gate of the white house in Washington. They certainly are a , menace to the president, of whom they ! wish to curry favor. It reminds me . of "Mordecai who lay at the kind's s gate." j I think President Wilson would do f well to take all the United States | soldiers out of Mexico and only keep ( an army along the border sufficient . to protect our government fro.11 Mexican raids and let Carranza and Villa I fight it out like the Kilkenny cats. The weather is very cold today. It s raining and sleeting and I think wc tvill have an icy time. Mr. J. W. Nance has been spending sometime with Mr. J. S. Griffin on his place near Gowdysville. Mr. Nance, Mr. Griffin and Mr. Munro Home were business visitors to Gaffney on Saturlay. Mr. J. D. Blackwood was a visitor n Gaffney on Saturday. The Coast Artillery boys of Jonesdlle are expecting their pay in the lext few days. There was a large crowd at Jonesrille on Saturday and the blind tigers were doing a good business, from all appearances.
