We write the figures 1917 or we can write in letters the same ] words, which either one is legal. There ;will be many 1917's written today. The old year has passed and gone with its many changes, many sweets and bitters. We can't help but look back ^ and think as the years go by of the changes from one year to the next. ? My mind always reverts to the scenes of boyhood days just at this season of the year more than any other time. I go back in imagination to the old home which was once the dearest j, place on earth to me when I was a f Doy, but m arter years we find our- c selves in another home and as the ? poet has described It, "There is no ^ place like home." But now I can only look at the vacant chairs in the home. v We are trusting in the goodness of r God, who is able to help us. Yesterday was a pretty day for the ^ time of year and there were many p present at Sunday school. There has been a great many moving and changing homes. I Mr. A. I). We are sorry to learn of the death ^ of Mrs. Bates, who lived with her son, i Mr. Claud Bates, who lives a few I miles from Union. I knew Mrs. Bates. She used to live in this section. There were a few social gatherings 'amonft the young folks during Christmas holidays. Mr. W. W. Vinson pave the young 8 folks a sociable at his home. Mr. John James also pave one at his home. ^ I am plad to say these sociables r were not dances. There was music on 8 the piano and sonps and other amuse- 8 ments, which were much better, I 8 think. I will say this writer was e invited like all the rest of the boys, 8 and played his part as a boy, and I J must tell you this, that some of the v i boys tried to pet up a game of steal * partner. That was a good way, you 01 know, to start the dance, and wanted f to get the girls in another room in the * house so as to have what they call steal partners. You see the point, ^ dont you? And this boy was there J and they knew it was against his pro- J fession, but there was a young lady ' present that had the nerve to say, I "If you start that kind of play I am ^ going home." I complimented that ^ young lady for the stand she took < and told her in the presence of the oth- t ers to stick to that, and there was no ] dance, and after that they all had a nice time singing and playing the niano. I forgot to mention that Mr. W. G. Gault had a very painful accident one night during Christmas.
